What do you think of this idea?

Here's an idea I had, although I'm sure someone's already thought of it. What if once a year, for one day only, Linden Lab reverted SL to the way it was one year previous? Reverted all the land and objects, i mean. On that day only, Lifers could go around the world and see it exactly as it was one year before. During that day, no one would be able to buy land, or modify objects, but all the objects that belonged to ex-Lifers could be copied, along with scripts and textures. I assume that Linden Lab backs up SL on a regular basis (I could be wrong), and that it would only be a matter of keeping a single back-up from the instant in time we choose to preserve. Lindens or old-timers could recreate events from the past, or just reminisce. New people could see just how bad (or good) the old-timers had it. Anyway, what do you think?

You're insane. :D
I'm perfectly fine with the time capsule that we burried.

I like the idea, but...

(There is always a but, isnt there?)

What if a new user comes in that day? They would be utterly confused by not being able to build, buy land, etc.

I am afraid I have to agree with Dave on this one. Sorry :/

I agree with them it would be totally confusing for a newbie just joining plus I always get spur-of-the-moment ideas and usually want to do them immediately.:p It was a good idea on paper though.:D

We can always reminisce at a no host chat like we did last night....

You know, it was very cool roaming the outlands alone and only bumping into Zoli, or having my lonely platform in Tehama and looking out and seeing nothing for miles, but the world as it is now is really cool too. It is probs a much better entry point for a noob now.

A slide show could be good for reminiscing, too. Steller has a bunch of snapshots of her experiences in the early world.

I like this idea, but for all practicle purposes, it wouldn't work.

Wow! Now my memory is flowing. Hehe thanks for the spark!

Before this idea gets tossed into the dustbin of bad and/or impractical SL ideas, I'd like to make a few more points. First, on the "reversion" day, you can keep all the brand new people in the prelude sim (or the future equivalent), or ask them to stay in the welcome area sims, or just not let anyone sign up that day. Alternatively, you could revert just those sims that were around one year ago, which might only be a small fraction. As far as people wanting to build or buy things on that day, you can still build objects, and copy them into your inventory, and even rez them into the world - the objects in-world will just go away at the stroke of midnight when SL is turned back into a pumpk- err, reverted back to the present state. As far as just relying on pictures of the old SL or the time capsule, why not take advantage of the fact that SL is a digital world whose state at any instant can be completely recorded "on film", so to speak. Well, at any rate, I hope Linden Labs is preserving the current state of SL somewhere for posterity.

One problem with that: LSL changes over time, so old scripts might not work, or might do unexpected things. I also don't think your idea of having everything copyable is cool either, it reminds me of robbing the dead. (No offense of course, it just seems a little creepy to me.)

That's what cameras are great for, to take pictures of the past. It'd be like going back to a really slow and old way of doing things. I know they would never do that, cause it's just silly. Were here for progress, not regress, I wouldn't care to see what the game would be like a year ago, the servers would probably crash everyone off the small amo8unt of sims that were probably available then.
