How does this sound:

This could be inside SL or out, but I'm motioning for out. I'd probably use the ancient 3L/Maythria engine (pfft, like anyone'll remember that anymore) for this. So just note that.

The propsoal: a free information, open source, international online community. Socialism, I know, does not work in real life. Nor would it work in a virtual world, but that's because of rebellion of the unwilling citizen. Thus, I would propose that we accept as members only those who the community would be of benefit to the community. Everyone shares everything, and money in this virtual community wouldn't be neccesary. It would be a meeting of smart, educated people with good, productive ideas that can all agree on one greater goal. A community like this could be VERY effective in, together, reaching whatever goal we set it to.

Of course, we would only take people who would be a contribution to that goal, and kick out anyone who decides to slack/rebel.

So, what do you guys think? Suggestions? Volunteers? Ideas for the goal?

Too hard to control in + out. Besides, when we're all controlling the protocal, it's open source. We can control what we can do, when we want to.

it doesn't work Darwin.... we tried initiating something very similar to that when Activeworlds screwed its citizen base. Too hard to get a lot of people involved and really make it BIG.

That's what I'm trying not to do. I'm trying to make it small and connected.

If one man says "Well done Mr. X, that was a great achievement", then Mr Y may get jealous of this praise.

It is human nature to want to suceed, and for this reason people are always going to want something, so sharing everything is hard.

Darwin, you know I love ya man, but this really belongs in off-topic. Posting this in General to take advantage of anti-LL sentiment is a bit tacky.

To see if humans could actualy pull off such a thing, and how long it lasts before someone sleeps with someone elses wife? "I thought we were sharing?!"

Well, maybe not the last part.

It would be an interisting social expirement, but at the same time hard and kind of tainted, because its not really "us", its how we choose to act in the world. So it would be more "can you act like you'd really do this?" or some such.

How about...

In my humble, uneducated opinion, I belive that Socialism in its purist form can't work out because there's no competitive spirit involved - human beings love to know that they are #1, or at least that they aren't in last place. One way to have some Socialism but with competition might be to have groups compete against each other; the individuals in a group would cooperate with each other, but there still would be some competitive element. Or, you could integrate a Bellamy-esque social scale and see if that's good enough.

Above all, I like the idea of Socialism in an online world, but it wouldn't be too much fun if it was all peace and love. :p

Let me clarifiy: I don't want this to be an open MMOG or something. This is supposed to be a small, collected community. The idea is to get people doing volunteer work in a tightly-knit, free-flowing online, creative environment. Probably 5-10, all with different skills.

Darwin, this proposal is so open-ended, I can't really see this going anywhere. So what do you envision this group doing? Curing cancer? Building a better mousetrap? Donning capes and tights and fighting crime???

I'd be willing to wear a cape and tights, but not fight crime.
