Looks like the NFL has raised the bar on stupidity this time. Any comments?

The game is broadcast for free. Why should someone be able to charge $45 a ticket to get into a party to watch TV?
If you were hosting a event in Dore and found out that someone was in Ahern charging newbies L$10 to tell them about it and show them where it was, would be be happy? _____________________

You are paying $45 dollars to go to the party, not to watch the game.

Yes!
NFL is turning into RIAA now huh? Har! Too bad that lousy XFL doesn't exist still, people could threaten to watch that instead (even though it sucked). The NFL is basically another monopoly... _____________________

But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Devlin, but the point of the party is to watch the game. I am not a staunch defender of the NFL or anything, but this is not really news. This is a common occurance. Even HBO fights to keep clubs from charging people to watch their boxing on big screen TV's. No matter how you feel about the NFL, it is not right that others profit from your event.

I still have to agree with the other side of this, Loki. If you can say that about the Super Bowl, you can say it about ANY show or movie. So now, whenever someone has a huge party anywhere at all, they aren't allowed to show any kind of "copyrighted" entertainment at all? Is that going to go for music too soon?
No way! I wish the NFL would give me a phone call so I can tell them where to shove it! _____________________

The NFL's letter was particularly devastating to promoter Todd Krohn, who had organized a party at The Orleans hotel-casino that was expected to draw about 6,000 sports fans at $45 a ticket. He estimated the cancellation cost his company, T & J Trust, more than $100,000. Losing $100,000 because they wanted to charge people to come to their house and watch TV? Thowing a party is one thing, I never charge a cover to get into my house. But, profiting in the manner T & J Trust has attempted to do is wrong. Its not the same as going to a concert, the band on stage is getting paid or have voluntarily agreed to be there. I guess there are a lot of angles to argue on this topic, but I dont have a problem with the NFL on this topic. I dont feel strongly enough to really care that much about it. So, Im out of this thread, please continue. ![]() _____________________

I have to agree with Devlin here. The point of paying $45 is to go to a party. I could understand the NFL's actions if the Super Bowl was a pay-per-view event that they charged $50 to watch, but since its on broadcast tv for free, it really seems petty.
The organizers of such events aren't really looking to make a profit from the game itself. Like movie theatres, they make their money from refreshments sold during the event. However, unlike a first run movie theatre, anyone who thinks the price is too steep can stay home, and (legally) watch for free. It just seems like colossal NFL greed to me. |

What is stupid about this is that no matter what, the NFL is still getting the same money. They make money from selling the rights to show their games to networks and the networks make money from selling commercial time. If people sat there at 100 different tiny screens and didnt pay someone the NFL would still make the exact same amount as if a bunch of people watched one huge TV and payed someone else to go to the party, get beer, socialize, and eat hotdogs. Corporations are so #$&@ stupid.

Yup. At least the RIAA can make the (false) claim that they are losing money EVERY TIME (lol) an mp3 is downloaded. The NFL can't even do that in this case! If the RIAA's stance is questionable (it is very), than this one is worthless.
NFL and Superbowl = monopoly in alot of ways. Hotels, airlines, etc. make money when NFL fans travel to other cities to watch their teams play big games... are we now going to disallow these companies from making a profit from NFL's "copyrighted" *gasp* "work"????????????? OMG!!!!111WFT TIHS SUXXX0RZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 NLF IZ LOOSING MONY O NOOO!! (Implied insulting "tone" of post entirely directed at RIAA and NFL )_____________________
