Uses for L$

L$ are not going away and will continue to be the primary means of in-world exchange in Second Life. Some users will choose to accumulate them and some will not, in exactly the same way as it is today.

What are L$ good for in 1.2? Beyond exchange, there will be ways to turn L$ into real-world money. If you don't like that, you can use L$ to pay for additional land. Still not happy? Use L$ to secure space on the new simulator opening up so that you have the best view!

Do you have any prospectives of what sort of exchange rate this would be? I mean, I knwo the details may not be worked out, but would be speaking $1000 for a 1024 plot, or $10,000 or $100,000?

What I'd like to know is how the RL Cash is going to be dished out.

As I understand it, it depends on dwell, but how much is given to each person?

And how IS the money given to the person? I want a cheque or money order mailed to me, my account is on someone else's credit card.

And what if the highest dwell is on group owned land? Like DarkLife must be accumulating helladwell but I guess nobody gets the irl money for it?

Come on Lindens, we need INFO! Feed the Need!

So you could buy and pay for extra land with L$ instead of US$?

Or is that just "Buy" and then you still have to pay the taxes on it through US$?

Tiger> Oops, how about "the next new sim"?

Alondria> The rights to get land on the next new sim will often be auctioned, so there won't be a fixed exchange rate. Instead it will depend upon the demand for those spots.

Relee> We've announced dwell and auctions so far. I think that money will be a check. Groups will be handled correctly.

Oz> There will be ways to offset monthly land charges with L$. After all, if we're going to give away real-world money it isn't really any different to reduce or eliminate monthly charges.

Ok, excuse me if this seems kinda stupid, but I just want to make sure I'm understanding it right. :)

So if I baught more land that goes over the free limit alloted to what I'm paying for subscription, I could pay for the tax on it completely in Linden $'s instead of US$?

Meaning I wouldn't have to pay out ANY extra US$ for the extra land.

Oz,
The specifics of using L$ to offset monthly land use fees in 1.2 isn't finalized yet. It is likely to be somewhat like the current scheme, i.e. to offset large amounts of land you need to be earning a fair amount of L$.

Misnomer,
1.2's basic system is that you pay US$ for land above and beyond your allocation. However, as has been suggested in the forums, much like using L$ to get US$ there will be ways to use L$ to offset land use fees.

Ahh, someone brought up a good question in the big holy thread, but it kinda got lost and I'd like to ask it here.

Will we no longer be penalized for building tall/flying structures?

If not, I might just build Kami's Lookout in Sage. :P

As of right now in 1.2, tall structures aren't more expensive.
