Neat. However, if we have 6 cards with 4 processors, that's 24 processors, and they said the machine would be about $25k, or a little over $1000 per processor.

I believe the current grid machines are each about $1000.

The fiscal math involved will probably eat Linden Lab's business plan alive, however nobody would likely complain about physics ever again :-P

The 6 card, 4 processor model was to get your desktop to rank in the current list of top 500 fasters comps in the world...

25 gigflops in the 1 card, 1 processor version even though its vapourware could come in handy in physics heavy sims :P

Oops, in the heat of the "ooooohhhhh gigaflops" moment, I forgot to mention that the fiscal math involved in adding 1 of these chips per server, while vastly improving physics, also doubles the bottom line investment per server.

And if the magic # I remember is 100 users per server, or $10 per user, that ups it to $20. Linden Labs is probably banking on 100 users for 1 month to at least cover the initial server cost. After that cost, everything else isn't anywhere near as costly and can be recouped quicker.

But just my speculation :-)

But I'd pony up $2k for a standard server with 1 of these chips added on :-D

Eh...I don't think I believe it. And even if it is partially true, if the rest of the system can't keep up will it really matter that much?

Yeah the card.. Wired loves vapourware.

Still, Lindenworld was a total let down. I was really excited and then it was too slow to go on the rides.
