Its a Physics Engine for Second Life.

Basically a program that controls the actions enacted by scripts on physical objects within the realm of SL.

Seems to be a perpetually unfilled promise as far as SL goes.... at least that is what I have gleaned from archives of these forums.

I knew 3 was out. Doesn't HalfLife 2 use Havok 2 or 3? As does UT2004 if I remember right...

Shadow,

Remarkably, it is still actually Havok 2 as the current release - at least according to their site, so I suppose LL has a little window of opportunity left before Havok 3 comes out. It does seem to be quite the vaporware announcement that we have always been chasing after eh? I remember Havok 2 talk from beta. I believe it was also going to be a patch to 1.4. :( Oh well, at this point I would just like an inventory search, so anything beyond that is just cake :)

Half-Life 2 actually uses Havok 1.*.

Also, Havok 2.* won't fix anything except to reduce the precision error that results in a gap around physical objects, and to eliminate the so-called "deep-think" issue that can cause sims to hang as a result of computationally-intensive interpenetrations, a problem that rarely occurs these days. It will not result in any major exciting changes on its own. From a user perpective, it will seem exactly like Havok 1.*.

The main reason people should want Havok 2.* is because it will allow the Lindens to get around to improving the way objects are linked. Because it's been a low-priority upgrade for years, the Lindens have held off on implementing several features that might otherwise be added, simply because it would mean they would need to be rewritten after the migration to Havok 2.*.

Think as Havok 2 as being like the gasoline you need to put in your car before you can go to the store to get bread. Also, assume it's really good bread. :)

So..a pretty good metaphor for SL right now..stale bread and watered down gasoline?
