It seems to me that there is a number of people who react very rudely to new players when they post simple(if naive) questions in the forums.
They also respond very rudely to those who post new ideas which, while a bit risky, have an opportunity to push the community forward.
This negativity simply scares new players and new ideas away because people do not want to be involved in a hostile community that seems to thrive on resentment, anger, and shouting each other down with a constant barrage of sniping and insults.
A number of the silent majority has told me the best way to deal with these posters is just to abuse report and ignore.
Well, I agree with this practice. And I encourage those lurkers to also abuse report the constant attacking of any attempt to bring a fresh perspective into SL.
This does not mean people who disagree. It means people who show little respect for fellow posters in these forums.
Hopefully we can eventually drive these people out.
No doubt a number of those who thrive on the anger I mentioned above will reply to this message as their existence is being threatened.
Their complaints will be short, pointless insults that have nothing do with encouraging new players, new ideas, and new positive energy into SecondLife.
Consider abuse reporting them.

Honestly, blaze, can you go 24 hours without griping about something?

just be sure what you abuse report is actually against a rule or you're abusing the report system and wasting Linden time. i'd hate to see someone get in trouble for filing false reports or griefing through abuse reports if their heart is in the right place. hopefully this advice doesn't count as "attacking of any attempt to bring a fresh perspective into SL".

Abuse reporting is already woefully abused

From: Ferran Brodsky Abuse reporting is already woefully abused If I recall, abuse of the abuse report system is abuse akin to being abuse reported yourself. Or something along those lines.

Blaze wouldn't be comfy here in the forums unless he bitched. It's the only way to even up the score in his mind. Blaze, we're sorry we have been here longer than you. If someday you can get past this, I offer you my first born daughter. Will that suffice?
Bitch on blaze. We're listening. I have no clue how SL made it 1.5 years without your police action. Thank you for repeatedly pointing out the fact that people vent on the forums, yourself included.

I have been disappointed to hear newcomers scared off from reading the SL Forums. I joke about it sometimes, but I do hear the sentiment expressed more than rarely that this can be a scary and hurtful place to be, especially if one takes it too seriously. All I can continue to do is be openminded and warm to welcoming newbies and encouraging them to explore the wonders of Second Life. I'm not a preacher, but perhaps I am a purveyor of funny craziness that couples with friendly cuddliness.

Is a forum post about using abuse reporting as a manipulation tool to get others to silence those who's post the original poster does not like reportable as abuse?
Sounds almost like a call for group negging....

From: blaze Spinnaker It seems to me that there is a number of people who react very rudely to new players when they post simple(if naive) questions in the forums.

This negativity simply scares new players and new ideas away because people do not want to be involved in a hostile community that seems to thrive on resentment, anger, and shouting each other down with a constant barrage of sniping and insults. I agree with you here Blaze. This does happen, though it's in no way unique to SL. It happens in every forum, everywhere, all the time. From: someone A number of the silent majority has told me the best way to deal with these posters is just to abuse report and ignore.
Well, I agree with this practice. And I encourage those lurkers to also abuse report the constant attacking of any attempt to bring a fresh perspective into SL. This is where you go all wrong. Abuse reporting is not the answer at all. As others have said it simply wastes the Lindens time. They aren't babysitters. The best way to deal with this problem is to have a thick skin and a sturdy spine and to make sure you aren't posting in a manner or tone that invites those kinds of responses. From: someone This does not mean people who disagree. It means people who show little respect for fellow posters in these forums.
Hopefully we can eventually drive these people out. Yep, and hopefully some day everyone will always skip along merrily shooting flowers out of their butts. It's nice to dream, but it's more useful to accept reality and not let it be a deterrant to speaking your mind.
