New and Creative uses for Particle Systems?

Has anyone spotted any new, clever or unusual ways to use particles?
We've all seen smoke, flames, steam, water, bubbles (and some crude greifer tricks), but I'm thinking there's probably many untapped uses.

For example, the Bedazzle crew used particles to make huge patches of flowers . Way cool!

On a less impressive note, I used particles to rig up my tin can of eyes (in light syrup) forever dribbling down into... well, I'm getting off topic here.

What new and unusual things have you seen? Or created?

Security systems....

Was rather neat too

First it became smokey

Then Lazer beams

Then ...oh wait that was RL ...nm

I don't know how clever it is, but I used particles to do a Star Trek transporter effect. The beam activated when someone stepped on a transporter pad. On the ground it was hidden in a couple of phantom, alpha prims so that the beam automatically appeared around them when they beamed to the surface. You know... of the planet. From the starship Enterprise. Man, I am such a nerd.

That does sound pretty cool Cadroe.

*puts Cadroe Murphy on his Star Trek crazies list*

Real cool!

I have a building in Miramare that is powered entirely by Maxx's jealousy.

The sphere on top of it has particles imploding in a nifty fashion.

Jopsy Pendragon has done some really cool particle stuff. I've seen a flag waving in the breeze, and a dangling hair braid.

One of these days I want to make some boots that leave footprints behind as I walk around...

eltee and (I believe...bad memory) lex separately made very good particle tails for furries. Lex's you could tweak and move with your mouse. :)

I've always been fond of Echart's puke particles.

The particles are green... with envy.

Jopsy has actually came up with a number of creative uses for particals... rainbows, lense flare effects around lanterns, moonbeams shining through trees at night, ropes and hoses.....

Cross Lament has an avatar radar that displays its results with particals.

I've seen sim stat displays and similar that use particals to graph their results.

I've seen particals used as holographic displays in vendors and so forth.

I saw particals used as motion blur on an avatar one time.

Hiro Pendragon uses particals to create a matrix-like air wave behind the slow motion bullets from his gun.

I tried to use particals one time to do the searchlight on a lighthouse. Never quite got that one working to perfection...

I saw the hands on a clock done with particals once.

I made a little fluttery flag that would hover over my shoulder... they work surprisingly well for animation! :)

i've done... heh.. stuff... i guess.... um.. jus all sorta random things... from little strange morphing artworks, through weather effects, throgh a self-randomizing set of christmas/holiday/new years lights, through cool little conversation starters, through hats, through interactive giant flickering wizard of oz style eltee heads through SL's only actual ballistic (physics enabled) fireworks system through any number of other weirdnesses heh.

I had a 'spoofer' setup awhile back (a listener that would take everything said on channel 1, and spit it out as anonymous bouncing particle letter messages) that was pretty funny when chromal actually hijacked it with a 'shout out' parasite he stuck onto it that would occasionally just spout out random '1337 speak' phrases.

Obviously the glosticks to.. and i duno what else jus stuff heh

if anyone wans, jus come over to lusk when i'm online and i can put on a little show... mosta my stuff (that wouldn't be considered as abusable) i will give away as public domain

I have a particle flower, tree, and cape - all done with the particle system and the default particle texture. :D

Polar coordinates are fun!

omnidirectional signs, i have one in my showroom, the logo always faces the viewer, a very cool looking effect.

Ok it's plugging my own work but I've been getting some great response to my virtual immersion chamber ... particles include stars, comets and nova fx.

AmbiPod@Alviso(183,130)

If you plan to visit make sure you're local sound is working too :)

I also make very realistic water effects with particles.
