Tenn. County Wants to Charge Homosexuals

DAYTON, Tenn. (AP) - The county that was the site of the Scopes "Monkey Trial'' over the teaching of evolution is asking lawmakers to amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature.

The Rhea County commissioners approved the request 8-0 Tuesday.

Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the measure, also asked the county attorney to find a way to enact an ordinance banning homosexuals from living in the county.

"We need to keep them out of here,'' Fugate said.

The vote was denounced by Matt Nevels, president of the Chattanooga chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

"That is the most farfetched idea put forth by any kind of public official,'' Nevels said. ``I'm outraged.''

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy laws as a violation of adults' privacy.

Rhea County is one of the most conservative counties in Tennessee. It holds an annual festival commemorating the 1925 trial at which John T. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution. The verdict was thrown out on a technicality. The trial became the subject of the play and movie ``Inherit the Wind.''

In 2002, a federal judge ruled unconstitutional the teaching of a Bible class in the public schools.

Luckily this is an outrageous and blatant abuse of constitutional rights. It may take a sew months, but it'll be struck down.

I just can't help myself, it's stuff like this tahe makes me beilieve, no, not just beleive, but have faith in the fact that religon itself is fundamentaly flawed and sick.

Perhaps they didn't like the "monkey" thing in schools too much because they felt they bear too close a resemblance to the subject at hand.

Totally wrong, and on top of that it violates the constitution and that Supreme Court ruling that was made a while back regarding sodomy.

That said.... If Bush has his way and gets his Constitutional Amendment, such laws and ordinances will be TOTALLY LEGAL.

Remember that, and fear the day the amendment passes.

Please dont let those bigots shape your impression of what it means when someone says they are a Christian. Not all of that faith are like that, no more than every Muslim is a terrorist, or every Catholic priest a pedophile.

In this as in every ideology there are those that take it too far and cannot resist making fools of themselves and the cause they claim to love. I dont for a moment think they will suceed in what they are trying to do, but I know for a certainty they will make it even more difficult for more moderate and empathetic and openminded Christians to have thier views respected. Not shared neccesarily, but at least respected. Thats not going to happen though, ever i think, and we all know why....THANKS, RHEA COUNTY.
