The last couple days in SL has been tough. Lots of down time, tons of lag and freak errors. I know as much as the next person, how annoying this could all be. After all, I too am a paying customer and I expect to be able to use what I pay for.

With that said, everyone take a small step backwards and look at the big picture.

My company, relies on the web to do 65% of our sales. When our technology fails, it leads to a stressful day. We have spent millions of dollars to perfect our e-commerce and have had to hire full time consultants to monitor and expand our technology needs. We pay these people allot of money to basically sit and wait for something to break. That’s the way life goes.

Yesterday morning, we had a simple hard drive crash in one of our data servers. Not much different from what Linden Labs is experiencing. Our website, which keeps food on all our employees table, was down for a total of 17 hours yesterday. My company made no money, our customers were left confused, and the consultants had to actually earn some pay.

My point is, this stuff happens. I once worked for Hyperion, a major business application/ data warehouse developer. I have lots of experience with SQL and other such data tools. I can tell you that no technology is 100% reliable. Things break, users abuse, and technology is bound to fail from time to time. I've seen it happen to Sony, IBM, Oracle, GE, Porn site, Wal-mart, The US Government, Maxis Games, X-Box Live, There, and yes, Second Life as well.

Again, I understand how pissed off something like this can make you. On the other hand, especially the many tech-heads who participate in this amazing virtual word of ours, please keep in mind what we are dealing with.

Blame the company that made the hard drive that eventually crapped out. Blame the fact that no technology is 100% reliable. Blaming Linden Labs just does not seem right to me though. I highly doubt they are happy that some first time users probably got a bad impression yesterday, I’m sure they are not happy that a well liked player lost their inv, I sure they are not happy that they had to work 16 hours or more yesterday to make us happy. Shit happens though.

I'm sure no one is dieing because Second Life went down. We are all still breathing to lurk on this message board.

The one GOOD thing about SL being down is the damn minors can't get in!

You know, I was one of the complainers. I should have thought of this. I am a Network Consultant. I am one of the people that would come out and try to repair the drive failure. I have been at company sites where they were loosing tens of thousands of dollars every hour and all we could do is try to get things going.

I am sure that Linden Labs knows that some of us have plans in the program. That we have that special someone that we want to spend the New Years with (hi Robin!). That we have that special event that we either have planned or plan to go to. Balls dropping at midnight (keep it clean! lol!!!) and everyone enjoying the holiday. I know the feeling they must have in the pit of their stomach. It is that feeling you get that makes you want to get physically sick but there is not enough time to.

Linden Labs, I am honestly sorry for being a fucktard and bitching about this. I hope you can get things going so you can all relax and enjoy the New Year yourselves.
