And the Alby Link: Democrats Out Of Touch With America

Democrats out of touch with America

Joel Kotkin
Nov. 7, 2004 04:20 PM

George Bush and the Republicans won riding the coattails of middle-class aspirations. Until the Democrats learn to appeal to such hopes and dreams, they are likely to remain very much behind in the political wars.

This demographic and economic reality trumped all the forces that, logically speaking, should have made for a John Kerry and Democratic victory, even a landslide. Yet in the face of a clearly bungled war and an uneven recovery, the Democrats suffered what has to be considered a humiliating setback.

Much of the story can be seen in three sets of statistics - demographic, economic and finally political. Wherever there has been strong economic and demographic growth, generally speaking, the Republican tide flowed. Where job and population increases have been weak, the Democrats scored big

I do not disagree, Alby. I think the both major parties are off in an ivory tower, somewhere, plotting their diabolical schemes.

I concur and so do most other average everyday people that I speak with. Which makes me very surprised that more independent candidates have not been successful. Particularly now that organizations like moveon.org are around to raise smaller public donations.

Your average everyday person doesn't vote either. There are 300/million Americans in this county. Only 122/million turned out to vote. The number of Americans under age 18 is about 70/million.

Don't confuse political sentiment with those who actually cast ballots. Somewhere on the Liberal Front lines, there is disconnect between the people who agree with MoveOn and those same people making it to the polls.

So based off 300/million Americans, 230/million are eligible to vote

300/m - Population
70/m - Not eligible
--------
230/m - Eligible Voters
122/m - Vote in 2004 Election
--------
108/m - Americans Did Not Vote (about 45% of the eligible population)

Your right Alby and this is something that I just don't understand. Even if there are no candidates that are worthy of voting for, if nothing else, one can write in the name of the person who they think would do the best job. Why pass on at least having some modicum of voice?
