I see all the complaints about 1.6 and it looks to me like noone likes it. I for one am really enjoying all of the changes and haven't found something that I don't like yet! I've heard of people losing inventory but this hasn't happened to me yet. I just wanted to know how you people felt.

just remember it's human nature to complain about bad things and not give complements for good things. plus people whisper complements and scream complaints. :D

1.6 is huge.

Even more impressive is the suprising lack of bugs.

However, I've been lucky so far.

It looks like there are two or three pretty major bugs that are affecting stability for some people. It's showing up on a pretty wide range of hardware as well, so I suspect it's probably SL's problem first, but I have no idea why it seems limited to certain individuals. Personally, I haven't experienced any crashing at all, a first for a 1.x.0 release, though I'm pretty sure I've found a memory leak involving movies and teleporting.

The login issue and inventory conversions seem to be over for most of us, so logins aren't taking hours now, so that'll reduce the number of complaints.

Just an observation, but the loudest complaints seem to be from people who haven't installed service packs, or who are running unsupported versions of Windows. That's not to say other people aren't seeing problems, it's just that there seems to be an unusually vocal contingent of non-2000/SP4, non-XP/SP2 users this time around. Obviously, I'm not privy to the crash reports, but I noticed Lindens bringing it up a few times. ("Your crash logs say you don't have any service packs installed... you really should try that...";)

It is prudent to investigate all avenues of one's knowledge before considering other possibilities, true. I have my share of silly oversights and overlooking the obvious, so if I miss something, it's usually big.

That being said, I really like what SL 1.6 has added, and once these lag bugs go away, it will be even more fantastico because it's kinda like seeing a puffy marshmallow that looks all gooey and yummy but it hasn't been roasted by the fire yet, ya know?

hehe nice analogy. I agree, I have noticed a few lag problems and login on thursday was like hearing that Bush won :p . Still I think that it is a superb addition to SL.

Good and bad, as one might expect
04-02-2005 15:02
I don't like the name bubbles, I don't like the rulers in the building tools and I don't like having to slide the cursor over to the rulers for grid snapping. I don't like the mouseover glows, I don't like the rounding off of visual elements. I don't like the way selected items in the inventory list light up now but i might change my mind and it is not a big deal anway. I don't like the lag spikes. There are some things I have heard off that I don't like but they are things I didn't make much use of anyway so don't much matter to me.

I like the streaming video, though it is causing some crashes. I havent' had a chance to make good use of the increased control of landowners objects on their land but I will like it when I try it. The new welcome area is pretty but I think it may a bit prim heavy for some folks computers. People seem to be having trouble at the 4 sim junction at the new WA, getting disconnected from crossing the borders as they move around.

I love the inventory search feature, but multiple item deletions still aren't working right all the time for me. I love the filters in the inventory. With proper naming of the items you have the inventory search feature will be really useful. I have already found a skirt I doubt I would have taken the time to find yet.

I like having the mini map button.

I like having the hardly ever used talk feature removed.

I like the constrain to plane handles but I want to know what to call them!

I like the avatar movement control coming up from the pie menu. In the past I have only tried it for walking and didn't find it too useful. Right now I am using it for flying and I may like it pretty good. I am sure some folks will think it's great.

I like having a marker for the sandbox area at Morris but it will impede vehicle's driving around . I have wanted to be able to see the sandbox boundaries on the ground view and on the map for the longest time. Wouldn't a distintive texture in on the surface be a more efficient way to convey that?

I found the transition quite non-traumatic . No gray avatars or missing textures.

I'm sure I will find more thing I like and dislike as the day goes on.

It is still shake down time for the new version.

wow, that pretty much laid it all out for us! I agreee on somethings, especially the chat bubbles. I when I read about them, I thought it would be cool like a comic or something, but I was disapointed. As for the building, I like the ruler showing up when I stretch something, and you can turn that off if you don't want it. Thanks for the imput ;) !

Drag select. Rotate
04-02-2005 15:51
Somebody asked me to teach them how to build, hot darn-it! sorry for the euphimism

So I am seeing the new build tools other than the ones I have mentione now for the first time.

They seem excellent so far. My student is picking it up real easy.

I haven't done a drag select with an object as a background yet.

Oh dear god, how delightful! I started my drag from a building in Nexus Prime and selected my objects.

This will eliminate a lot of cussing.

Rotation: the new rotation rings allow you to see if you are in contrained rotate or freeform rotate much better.

The new angular snap reticule is better looking.

Now for a big deletion. Love that drag select!

I didn't count them but was several hundred objects I deleted. None ghosted.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOT DAMN NONE GHOSTED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHEEE!

It would be good if a fair number of us could access 1.6 without freezing and crashing out every 20 or 30 seconds. Then we could give you an opinion.

And while I appreciate the helpfulness, there's no need to suggest updating drivers, minimal system requirements, etc. All of that has been discussed elsewhere. We're talking about updated, high-powered computers that ran 1.5 and the 1.6 preview successfully.

It seems to me that problems related to being able to run SL at all should take precedent.

Based on my past experience with other online places (mostly MMOs), this update is no better or worse than some I've been through. Some good things were added, some bugs were fixed, and some things that should have been addressed probably weren't. It's always like that. Also like any other online place, there's always a vocal minority of forum posters who will complain no matter what.

Me? I'm not too worried about it. I've got some stability problems with 1.6, but I'll adapt until the fixes get in.

I wish i could vote for 1.6.1

- video ++
- name bubbles -
- chat bubbles + (i don't use them, so it's good they're optional)
- inventory search +++
- return of objects per owner +
- new rotation angles/rotation selection ++
- grid scale ++
- drag select + (doesn't work as well as expected)
- move by 'little triangles' --
- snap scales with camera zoom in ++
- snap scales with camera zoom out -----!!! (basically ruins all improvements for me)
- edit linked prims +/-
- new LSL commands +
- rotate with mouseclick on avie +/- (breaks weapons...need to click above avie now)

- crashing bugs (shadow) ---
- crashing bugs (sim related) --
- timeout errors on taskswitch --
- tp bugs --
- alpha texturing z-order bugs --
- llSetText [|] bug -
- no trans permission bug (?) on textures --
- no mod permission changes --
- texture/drag selection bugs --- (non-undoable texturing of entire objects is bad)
- camera errors on zoom --

The problem there being that Mr Gates' Service Packs themselves have caused many problems for gamers. Some of them have turned out to cause massive instability when gamers are attempting to access certain online games. I remember having big issues with this after an October SP was released. The game I was playing would simply crash to desktop repeatedly, in some cases would reboot the entire system over and over. After months of puzzling over this I was told to remove one of the SP's and see what happened...sure enough, the game ran fine once that certain SP was removed. No computer expert here but that tells me there are often compatibility issues between the OS updates and the games. So some people get leery of installing the darn things.

LL sure as hell got their priorities wrong. Although I like the reduced lag, the simple fact remains that new features (such as video) should not be added whilst there are so many outstanding issues left to be resolved. As a vehicle builder and user, I was really hoping that something would be done about crossing sim borders, for example.
Plus removing useful functionality, like being able to take a landmark from someone's "picks" is the work of a retarted mind!

There's a reduction in lag? Maybe I don't notice it because I always seem to be crashing now. :(

I love the new features when I can log in, which seems to be about 1/10th of the time.

Yeah, I'm stuck in the log in too and I'm getting sick of this constant battle with SL. It has been a long time since logins started messing up, and I think that should have been the first thing to get fixed in 1.6.

I adore that you can finally turn off the automatic camera whirl around while editing. That was the first thing I did once I was able to log in. It did take me all day to log in, but if the poor server was converting my inventory, then I'm surprised I ever got in.

I am troubled about the change to permissions where you can no longer use a no copy or no transfer texture in a clothing slot. Even though this permission change does not effect me, it makes me nervous that a change wiped out the businesses of makeup and tattoo designers. Especially when content creators have been begging and screaming for permissions changes such as Keep Free, Transfer, but no Resale... as well as some confidence in the stability of the permissions that do exist. The serious need for more flexible permissions has been a hot subject the entire year I have been here.

I did participate in the Preview grid permissions test. They seems well thought out and the results were as the test scenario predicted. Rigorous testing reassures me.
