Nov 06 00:27:50 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Ok, "State of Play"
Nov 06 00:28:45 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Last weekend you may have noticed I wasn't around...
..
Nov 06 00:29:24 <Teppy[eGenesis]> I was invited to a conference about law in online worlds. 200 lawyers abd 5 game developers in a room. Felt like I was in a terrorist training camp.
..
Nov 06 00:30:28 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Anyway, the conference explored all areas of law as it (will) relate to online worlds.
..
Nov 06 00:31:48 <Teppy[eGenesis]> And the thing that I was >shocked< at, was that the lawyers are assuming that of course the RL law is going to regulate online worlds, the question is just "what sort of regulation is best?"
Nov 06 00:32:42 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Second Life was used as an example quite a bit...
..Nov 06 00:33:46 <Teppy[eGenesis]> And it's sort of easier for them (the lawyers) to make a case for regulating a world like that, because it's more a place people "live", instead of a game that presents challenges, and that you try to win.
Nov 06 00:34:11 <Teppy[eGenesis]> So, what kind of regulation? ...
..
Nov 06 00:34:47 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Well, suppose a bug in the software causes you to lose an in-game item that you bought on ebay for $1000.
..
Nov 06 00:35:42 <Teppy[eGenesis]> And assume the rules of the game say you're not allowed to sell items, and you're an idiot if you paid $1000 for a pretend sword.
..
Nov 06 00:36:36 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Well, under one theory of law that doesn't matter, you can sue the game company (and win) because the item has RL value, regardless of what the game company says.
Nov 06 00:37:26 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Hate speech is another opportunity for players to sue developers. (Failure to censor those engaging in hate speech)
..
Nov 06 00:38:18 <Teppy[eGenesis]> Actually, let's just do this as an unmoded free-for-all. Kinda hypocritical to be speaking about free speech in a moderated channel.
Nov 06 00:38:24 --- Teppy[eGenesis] sets mode -m #atitd
Nov 06 00:38:25 <Skade[Marduke]> Hey all I know if I can sue for that kinda stuff, I'm going to, it's as simple as that. Easiest way to make my money back on ones I hate (not ATITD)
..
Nov 06 00:38:56 <Spritchs> heh
Nov 06 00:38:57 <Drakien> hmmm i can talk!?
Nov 06 00:38:57 <Only_Aloha> i am sencing a new type of players will rule the game comunity if that is true
Nov 06 00:39:01 <Ryhiad[BPG]> I think both ideas are stupid and will never work
Nov 06 00:39:02 <Kir> Is it against the rules of Egenesis to sell items for real cash?
Nov 06 00:39:02 <Drakien> i can talk!
Nov 06 00:39:03 <lucky_m_effer> i am currently working on a research project investigating the exact scenarios you have described.
Nov 06 00:39:08 <TheDude> hmm... can you hide under the "access provider" shield to some extent? (like isp's do for the most part)
Nov 06 00:39:13 <Tweetiti[GM]> sson our dreams will be regulated
Nov 06 00:39:16 <kuu> Kir: presumably not, given Igoka, right?
Nov 06 00:39:17 <Tweetiti[GM]> soon*
Nov 06 00:39:17 <Drakien> well thats kinda dumb thats like sueing mcdonalds cause ur fat
Nov 06 00:39:20 <Xeres> Teppy learned to Unmod the channel!
Nov 06 00:39:21 <Xeres> o.o
Nov 06 00:39:22 <Xeres> Yay
Nov 06 00:39:26 <it[Bes]>

Nov 06 00:39:28 <Spritchs>

Nov 06 00:39:39 <Ifur> This might be valid in the US, but soemthing tells me the european courts would laugh, and laugh hard.

this was from tonights IRC chat with the creator event....they are frequent and I usually do not attend...but this one was quite interesting...(you would have to see the rest of the glass blowing stuff to understand)
I don't play anymore but it is nice to see the SL name thrown about
