What would be a good (or amusing) publicity stunt for SL residents (and/or Linden Lab) to pull to get the attention of the general public (and attract more members)?
Brainstorm here- be as crazy or serious as you wish...

Hmm. They could run naked through the streets, shouting "LOLOLOLOLOL OMG WTF" (however that's pronounced in real life). Then hand out flyers telling people how *they* can get in on that action. :)

I don't think poor marketing is SL's problem. Good marketing is a great way to pay the rent, but I think the rent is getting paid.

We have a foundation, (8 million / benchmark backing) .. so no need to act like a desperate dot com.

I think what's needed now is clear and compelling content.

A good stunt I've seen here is to post a few threads about how you 'Care about the SL Economy' but then only suggest ways your actual business could be helped. That's more of a meta-troll, but it does raise your visibility some, even if you are subsquently labeled a complete whiner.

So maybe not for everyone, just the ones that love to play victim.

Maybe a public trial and (if guilty) subsequent execution of certain US political figures? I think that would bring an interesting and progressive-thinking class of user. ;)

Well, one publicity stunt isn't hijacking a bunch of threads with elliptical insults about other users. Sigh. There is so much self-loathing on these forums it's insane.

Anyways, I think having fan chat q&a with a famous person coming into SL would be cool. Like the founders of ID or maybe Spielberg or someone.

Hmm.. the only problem I guess is the inevitable lag. :)

I do believe it is a natural progression for Neal Stephenson to step up, grip hands in brotherly solidarity with Philip Linden ne Rosedale, and the two of them to make championing announcements about Second Life being here. After all, this is the metaverse. The technoacolytes would be up in arms! :)

When's the last time we've been Slashdotted?

Oh lord Dwellnor, mighty of mighties, please expunge the word 'hijack' from the unwashed hordes. They mangle and denigrate this great language with their continual utterings of self-servitude.

Blessed be the Club, the Mall and the Casino, Lag forever in thy name, Amen.

Not exactly a publicity stunt but one thing I've always wanted to do is get a spindle of those credit card sized CD-Rs and burn the installer and an autorun.inf to it, then leave stacks of them with "Free! Amazing MMOG demo! Please take one. 1st week free." etc. on the counter next to the free AOHell CDs at Wallyworld, S-Mart, wherever.

How 'bout it Phil? Send me a couple of spindles and a label maker kit :)

Oh and way to make the installer use my referral number so you know who's install is getting passed around :p (I'll just make the autorun pull up the site manually along with the installer for now.)

Excellent! idea Upshaw.

I'd distribute these in my area and get some folks to help.

Call LL directly and talk to them about it.

Is it really self-loathing? For the most part, it seems rather targeted at a handful of people.

Offer a free lifetime account to the first person who legally changes their name to their Second Life name. (Only valid if the person's SL name doesn't use their real first or lastname.)

We have to assume Neal has been playing SL for a while, no?

Give everyone a free Sl t-shirt upon signing up for a premium account (backdated of course so we all get one). With a cool pic and maybe their Av name on the front, and the website URL on the back.

True, and I'm opposed to capital punishment besides-- but it'd be symbolic; you know, burn in effigy, etc. This is all virtual.
