When I joined SL there were about 60 sims and around 3,000 members (est.) - today we have what - 15,000 SL citizens? When you joined SL - how many sims/members? Thanks to the stats at Higbee Protagonist's SL Parks & Rec Service Web Site we see how large our world has become. Parks and Recreation ServiceHigbee's SL Land Statistics are based upon visible simulators and are at the bottom of the home page. 481 Mainland Simulators 80 Private Islands 36,760,086 sq. m. (8,976 acres) of virtual land

Not sure how many people...
But there were about 47 or so sims when I came in sometime in 1.0.
I would guess there were around 1,000-5,000 active residents at the time?
Large variation there, but I really have no idea, there were alot fewer greendots on at a time back then, and smaller "main events".
Very interisting page.

When I were a lass, there were just the one sim. and not even the size we have now - they were about a quarter that size. Everyone in the whole world used to come huddle round the one particle campfire in a copse of a dozen linden trees. It were simpler times then. There were no need for events listings or even events really, cuz we were all in shouting distance of each other; if one person decided to have a party, you were pretty much there by default. And there were at least as many lindens as there were residents, too.
And that was of course when Second Life actually got to be software! Before that, we were all stick drawings and used to all get around on Post-It Notes that Philip moved by hand on his dining room table.
Aye, those were the days.

From: Adam Zaius Cayman & Avalon not count? I ono. He said he joined a month before the first island. His join date is May. Just pointing out I had my island in April. Which was not the first. Ergo, his dates are incorrect. Is that alright by you, Adam? Is it? Is it? Hmmmmmmmm?

Ach but in my day we didn't have none of them new fangled particles. We had a texture of flames on a prim, and Lee Linden danging round with it on his head to make it look like it was moving. And a dozen linden trees? Sheesh... we had a twig, and we liked it. We had to, there was no more!

I joined when the world had a hourglass shape, and Tan was the chokepoint. God help you if you had to fly through there and an event was preventing entry from the sim being full. Heh.

we did eat dirt when those fabulous new textures hit what are now the most revered core sims.
of course, at this point in time, i'm petitioning to have that texture updated because oh sorry, wrong thread.
i joined on garth and pituca's wedding day right around the time that olive was being lotteried. so i guess there were about twenty sims and i remember being told that the world had around four-thousand residents. i have no idea how to confirm that number though.
a time line with such stats and milestones would be a fabulous website feature wouldn't it. maybe we can wrap one around the event area in zoe at 300M and sitport people up to it.
am i rambling again?

If you had your island in April, then you got them before they were offered to others, if I remember correctly, a couple sims named Nord and Sud Schongebiet were the first to show up as purchasable sims back in September 04.

Nah. Island sims have been round way longer than that! They announced the ability to buy islands and implemented the web bit in March. I filled out the form on the website to get mine on 31st March, but they weren't actually ready with the details or the different terraforming options at the time, and I bugged them for a couple weeks, and on 15th, Haney contacted me with the land choices and asked what I wanted, I said 'flat. I'll do it myself' and it came on the grid the very next day.

When I showed up there were 3 Sims and a Mish Mash of builds. Unfortunately there was never a soul in sight and there was only a 4 hour log in window to get in world. Now if you got in and hung around past the log in window you could hang until...the dreaded crash which happened quite infrequently back then.
I remember then the most fun thing I had to do was tinker with my Avatar. Now it seems so cliche to even go into Apperance mode that I generally wear my clothes for at least 4 months or until they say ok we are walking off...LOL

*cough* Just going to point out that your numbers on existing sims are a bit low.
Mostly unaccounted Linden sims (Orientation Islands, LiasonLand, et al).

In July 2003, I was working for the SLCR, Second Life Consumer Reports, and I did a review/description of all the current sims in the world. This was just after the Color Sims came online North of Boardman. Anyway, July 2003, there were 42 sims total. Not sure of the population, but it sure felt like everyone knew everyone else, or at least knew "of" them.

16 sims, all in a square. They had no names, so you would refer to them as second from the right, 2 down. I think there was 40 or 50 registered accounts before me, or at least some very prolific builders, but only 4 non lindens that I ever met the first week. A few months later, they were wiped, and replaced with the start of what we know now.

bbc Hey BBC, wish I could see ya ingame again some time! One of my first experiences in SL was to go to a party at your place - the one with the roof that was made up of two huge hanger doors, remember? And Feniks' place was right up the sim, so to speak....but anyway, there were 16 simsquares at the time? Seemed smaller, heh Take care - Sol
