Is it still "choose to charge"?

Back when I joined SL, when I signed up for my free account, I had to go to the webpage and actively CHOOSE to switch to the basic 9.95 account in order to keep playing.

Is it still that way, or has LL changed it to a "We're going to charge you unless you cancel!" system?

The signup page currently says -

Cancel before your trial expires and you will not be billed.

So I'd say you have to actively cancel, not actively sign up.

I joined in October 2003 and don't remember whether it was choose to charge then, especially since I signed up after three days or so because I thought SL was so cool. I didn't think it was too long after that, mentioning SL to friends that it was not choose to charge. I remember telling them to be aware of that. I thought for sure it was at least by January when you joined, but it's been a long time.

Damn. Yeah, a friend I'm trying to rope in confirmed it. They changed. Bah.

It's quit before they charge you now. Made that mistake when my wife wanted to try out SL.
