Slow load times are caused by what?

Last week, I reported to one of the Linden Brainiacs that my load times sucked. It would take me more then two minutes to load everything around me when I fist logged in. If I were to go to a different SIM, it would take me another two minutes to load beore I could see anything.

The Brainiac told me, it's the textures in the world that are causing this evil lag. People should be using 24 bit 256x256 or lower resolutions and all your troubles will go away!

Well, not being the brightest online game networking guy int he world, I settled that this must be the probelm, otherwise, why would they say that?

Well, after tonight, I'm in a small quandry. You see, one of the great Brainiac's announced that a group of SIMS were coming down in 5 minutes for a reset. I was already in the process of removing a number of textures from a vendor so I decided to stay on and see if I couldn't get them all out before I got the boot. This is what actually led me to my small quandry. You see, when I started this process, I would right-click on a texture, then click delete, then have to wait 10 to 15 seconds before the system would allow me to delete another one. I have come to accept this slow response being caused by all these evil texture makers that are eating up my processes, so I continued on. Well, once this announcement of the shutdown occured, I began to notice something strange. The times between my deleting of these textures from the object were taking less and less time. As a matter of fact, as more and more PEOPLE logged off, the faster and faster I was able to remove thing from my object. At the end, before I finished, it was taking less then a second to remove a texture from my object!

One must then question, is it really the texture evil doers that are causing these lagging problems of mine? Or is it that the networks are overloaded and something needs to be done about that?

I would like Linden Lab to STOP adding more servers, and instead, invest some time and money into finding out the REAL REASON behind these slow load times, and slow process times, everyone is having. Stop spending that 8 million dollars, and instead, start looking for a better way to make our servers, our processes, our load times, better. If you don't do this now, you probably never will, and quite frankly, I'm not buying this excuse of blaming the textures for causing my slow load times and slow processing times.

Please, I beg you LL, look into this issue before you add more and more and more, and then find out, it's too late to do anything about it and everyone will be stuck in the molasses, and there will be nothing that can be done.

Thanks for at least listening!

I've noticed this aswell, load times are starting to really become annoying. It's bad for the shopping areas especially when they're sales are dependent on people actually being able to see what that item looks like on the prim rectangle on the wall but when it takes 60+ seconds just to see what it is I'd as soon fly away and find something else to do.

The asset server seems to have been misbehaving majorly lately. My guess is that these two are related.

However, what the Linden said is true... EVERYTHING in SL contributes to lag. Its just a question of to which extent it contributes to lag.

I can also recommend this web site for some good trouble shooting tips for several SL problems. This isn't likely to be what you were experiencing, but its a great resource on the LSL Wiki site:

Flipper: Any links to how to debug your parcel for performance? Starting today, when I edit, my FPS drops to between 4 and 11 FPS from a normal 40-60+. I don't know if I buggered something up with poor texturing or prim manipulation :/

Huh, that is a bizarre one! IM me in world and I'll come have a look and see if anything sticks out. I haven't heard of that drastic an fps drop from going into edit mode before.
