Group Object Deed Permissions - I Need The Facts!

I've heard conflicting views and I'm trying to get the facts. I posted it here because it spans practically every topic ;) Here's the story:

I sell stuff. My stuff includes scripts that I keep no-mod/no-copy so people don't steal my code (I run a business and try to keep a competitive edge, after all). So someone asked me if my product works on group land. I said "I don't know. Let's try it."

My customer was told by a group officer that I *HAVE* to make my scripts full-modify and full-copy for them to work on group-owned land, and that's "just the cost of making them work here."

I didn't believe a word of that. So I found another group, talked them into helping me out, and BEHOLD, it worked, keeping my permissions in-tact.

We got it to work like this:
1. Give product to group officer.
2. Officer rezzes product on group land.
3. Officer deeds all objects in product to group.
4. Officer deeds product to group.
5. Everyone is happy and dances.

So is there any REAL reason a group can insist on contents being full-mod, full-copy in order to work properly? Do all scripters have to give up their code if they want to have group-land customers?

I'm really looking for a straight answer here, so if anyone has any experience with this, speak up!

Cheers,
-CB

under certain circumstances it may need to be copyable, only b/c group objects that r returned are really deleted. Im not aware of any reason you would ever HAVE to make your code modable though ( you can always use a notecard to update info inside a script). Hope that helps :).

It does. I've heard of the returned=deleted issue, so copy can be set for groups. Thanks :D

Hmm. All the land I use belongs to a group and I use scripted objects all the time. Are we talking about setting an object to a group, or deeding to a group?

Wanting mod and copy sounds like they want your scripts tbh.

Deeding to group. And yes, I think they wanted my script, but I wanted to cover all my bases and make sure it wasn't a valid concern. It's my automatic video-syncing script. ;)

Ah, this sounds like a great Prokofy-scandal-in-the-making, and to think, we still had a buzz on from yesterday's scandal.

Look, dude, I don't want your scripts for free. I don't even want your scripts, period. In fact, go and look at the EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES section where you will find a post by Random Unsung asking for a projectionist who can solve the video problems and who
can find a maker of a script that WORKS that we can PAY FOR>

Crystalshard Foo released a free script that we use in our rentals group extensively. It works most of the time. But it doesn't do everything everyone wants I guess. And it just hasn't worked sometimes. So tenants shopped for others and found yours.

To my recollection, one, possibly two tenants came to me with the Captain's video last night. They asked me to share-to-group and deed-to-group this object. I did. It did not work.

I explained to them that such deeded objects DISAPPEAR when returned in returned objects (even when set to group) so they may risk losing the expensive radio. We had that happen. This radio is $999 I think so I don't want that to happen to tenants.

Even after getting this radio with promises from the maker -- you (according to the tenant) that is was a GROUP RADIO (not sure what made it "group" but whatever), I tried to shared-to-group, deed-to-group

AND IT DIDN'T WORK AT 11:00 P.M. EST ON COLUMBIA IN THE NEW CONTINENT.

OK? It did NOT work. As you said it would. Despite my tenant paying you $999 (and me being willing to pay that too). Because of server lag? Because of game bugs? Who the hell knows?

So I checked off inside every single card the "share with group" option but naturally I couldn't check off the script, duh, because you have that locked and I RESPECT THAT.

So I told the tenant: go back to the maker and explain that due to the fact that the permissions aren't open -- every single one -- IT IS NOT WORKING.

That was not a request to swipe your script. You have absolutely no evidence of that! I have FREE scripts I distribute so I don't need yours. I don't know why you have $999 videos but I reasoned it could be due to the cabinetry, which was skillfully done, like the $999 radios, so the customer is paying for cabinetry, not a script inside which maybe isn't a big deal to open up, like Crystal's wasn't.

So I invite you to come to Columbia with something you feel can work, that doesn't compromise your ability to keep your script locked, and see if I can deed it to the group, after of course sharing it with the group, and have the config card work through the tenant imput.

For all I know, he finally got it working now. At no time did anyone rob you of your script.

Honestly, Roberta? Captain? I do not need or want your script. Please get over it! One tenant asked me how to get it to work == actually two were constantly IM'ing me all night on 2 different sims, and I was getting really tired of it not working. I just said "go back and ask them to open up permissions" because CrystalShard's free script DID THAT.

Make money off your script, PLEASE! Tell me where I can get a bulk purchase of your VIDEOS PLEASE! TAKE MY MONEY! PLEASE!

Just don't imply I'm trying to steal your script, and before spreading yet another vicious rumour about me, ASK.

How do you "deed a script" to group or for that matter a notecard?

I looked on the properties both inside and outside of inventory and I just don't see that option on notecards and scripts.

I see only the option to deed a prim object in which those items are contained with their permissions checked off.

Got a better way?

Hi Prokofy, nice to meet you. A bit hostile? ;)

Truthfully, I didn't know who was the one who said it wouldn't work on group land unless completely open. Judging by your defensive language, I'm assuming it was you? My post was intended to find out if there was something I was missing, not to "spread vicious rumours about you." I'm not a big fan of lies.

With that aside, thanks for the comment, it provides a lot of insight. We did get it working on group-owned land, so I included detailed instructions on how to get it to work. Did you read those instructions?

The reason my product has value is not the eye-candy (eh, it's not THAT good looking), but the script. It's features live-time-syncing that lets new agents watch the film at the same time as other agents. Plus, it's preloaded with 290 feature-length films, soon to be bumped up to 400 :) My current library is at a little over 3000 (52 days of streams), to be integrated into an upcoming theatre project. The time-syncing feature is why I keep it closed. I'm sure you understand.

Anyway, I'd be glad to come over and give it a shot. I'll also gladly take you up on your offer of "TAKE MY MONEY! PLEASE!" ;) Seriously, though. I'd love to do business with you if we can work something out.

If anyone else has any more input on issues with permissions and group-owned land, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again,
