Out of the 17 or 18 people I have referred to SL, at least 6 of them have encountered the same frustrating problem, which occured again last night. Upon completing sign up, they never receive the confirmation email, or it takes a day or more to finally show up. Obviously this is very disconcerting to someone who is waiting to play a game and just wants to confirm their account. Please add the ability to resend the confirmation email, and look into why this keeps happening. I have reported it as a bug as well. A friend signed up twice last night to try to get in, at two different email addresses, and never received the confirmation email.

I have refered four people now to SL, and three of those had to create a new trial account using my email address because they never recieved their confirmation. One friend tried 6 times to sign up, using Yahoo, Hotmail, work and home addresses and never recieved confirmations. Finally they were able to create an account using my email.

The fourth person is my business partner, and used my mail server.

I have stopped telling people to sign up the normal way. It's not worth the hassle. I would love to see more of my friends play, but it's embarasing when I pump up the game to them, and they get screwed by the email before they can even check it out.

BTW if you need an email account that will work with Second Life let me know. I can create one for you on the server I'm putting the SL Direct Dirctory Service on, as that server seems to work fine.

See, this is obviously a widespread problem - either remove the confirmation email step, or fix it please - this has gone on for too long and leaves a bad first impression.

The confirmation email step is a fairly standard method to verify that the email address you entered is valid. We require that every player have a valid email address because some game mechanisms use email as does billing.

If you can provide us with more information about the people who had trouble with recieving a confirmation email (the email address that they used, the name that they requested, etc), I can look into it. However, historically it has turned out that email problems have been a result of a mistyped email address, a full email box, or a hyper-aggressive spam filter, with a few instances of ISP bogosity thrown in for good measure.
