If you mean Waterhead, I wish it *did* have a phantom roof. I am sick and tired of banging my head on that stupid roof and fighting my way out of that RL-like structure which is such a nuisance in SL. I'm tired of the spam cards, too. And now it is down to 79 FPS as a newbie center, and almost unbearable. At least put it on a better server.

i meant ahern, dore et cetera. it has roofs. they are not phantom. they just still don't get it.
telehubs have nonphantom roofs and yes, waterhead as well. how can they create a world with flying avs and phantom prims and not understand the dynamics of oh never mind. they are very pretty builds and i'm sure they used a very shifted and stretched textures so that it's easy to download. |

telehubs have nonphantom roofs and yes, waterhead as well. how can they create a world with flying avs and phantom prims and not understand the dynamics of Yes, what is particularly idiotic about the telehub designs is that they have these kind of wings on them, or roofs, as if people fly INTO them and hang out on those wings, and then descend into them, like subways. But of course, nobody flies INTO a telehub, they only fly OUT of it after they have teleported to that telehub. Maybe someday they anticipate that you will fly up to a telehub building, click on it, and go somewhere, but I don't see it. They have opted for building real-life like buildings that "look good" but then sacrificed AV comfort. These telehubs at Miramare, Waterhead, and elsewhere do have roofs Shadow, duh, as you should know since you live out that way, even if you set home to that land. And yes, it is damned annoying even if you try to see it coming and maneuver your av out of the way. With the spam cards and lag now, it is unbearable. _____________________

Maybe the actual telehub won't be under the roofs at the new WA?
You guys are getting pretty excited before actually knowing where the telehub is going to be. If I had to guess, I'd say it would be around the fountain in the center, where there is no roof. |

i don't care where the telehub is. that's entirely beside the point. in a world where people can fly into your buildingfrom the sky, and prims can be phantomed, it's just plain foolish to roof a build with nonphantom prims. i'm keenly disappointed in the ll builders' lack of vision on this point. if they're going to persist in maintaining a welcoming presence on the grid, they should at least set a good example.
telehubs are a whole other story. they've not lived up to the purposes for which they were created and are, by far, more of a hinderence to people's business and pleasure than they are they are helpful. robins reply to this thread encourages me that ll at least realize the problem and might take steps to solve it soon. |

just like in RL!

The new builds are gorgeous, yes, and they are wonderful for what they are. They also slow my client down to about 4 FPS. I think it's all the alpha/trans textures, as that usually slags my graphics card.
Roofs wouldn't need to be phantom if they weren't so obstructive in the first place. I've always wondered why, with the limitless possibilities of SL architecture, people insist on creating things that look just like RL buildings. I'd love to see LL use a bit more imagination and break out of the RL imitation mode. _____________________

i think making the welcome areas architecturally familiar (i.e. like first life) is helpful to new users. to be honest, i don't think they are going to think of flying right off.
however, i think it would be great to show the potential of sl by creating architecture that doesn't ape first life, but illustrates the options for architecture in sl. most of first life architecture is limited by the fact the people can't fly. flight opens whole new architectural realms, it would be great if these were in the welcome areas for people to see. maybe some of the architecture students in sl could be commissioned to build something. _____________________

You call that build a lack of vision? It's one of the most amazing builds I've seen IW lately. Innovative use of textures and prims - incredibly detailed and planned design... no, that's not what I would call a 'lack of vision'. Personally, I like to sit on the roofs in public spaces... like a hawk to watch people. Can't do that if it's phantom, or can you? _____________________

As long as the roof is high enough to port in and fly I think everyone would be fine with it...I personally like to have a roof even though there is no need for one....but then again there is no need for any build in SL.

I see what you're saying Khamon.. so, let me add my own experience in to the mix. One of the larger builds I did had a roof that initially we (the owner and I) decided to make phantom. We switched it back after we found people loved to perch themselves upon the roof and watch the festivities below. : hrugs::_____________________

One of the larger builds I did had a roof that initially we (the owner and I) decided to make phantom. We switched it back after we found people loved to perch themselves upon the roof and watch the festivities below. : hrugs::From the first I've tended to make roofs that doubled as decks. It gives people a place to land and doubles your floorspace. But the roofs at the new WA aren't well built for standing or walking around, so nix that. However, I found out today that flying through the beams under the curved roofs is pretty cool. My pref for SL architecture is to move away from RL modes where buildings protect their contests from the elements and unwanted people, and instead use builds mainly to define space, direct attention and facilitate interactions. Yes, esthetics are important. But wouldn't those lovely conservatory window roofs look just as good in a configuration that allowed for easy access via flight? _____________________

i went to the welcome area to look around.
when i started sl, my system wasn't as good as it is now. but it functioned mostly adequately in the old welcome area which was less lagtastic. i upgraded my system specifically for sl. the new welcome are was lagtastic for client on my upgraded system, and there were no av around to contribute to the client lag. i have a pretty good set up, and i was waiting for things to appear and bake. the new welcome area may be really laggy for new arrivals who haven't tuned their system for sl yet. the new welcome are is very appealing, but the designers might not have quite the right audience in mind when it come to client lag. _____________________

well stone, you're just being silly and demeaning for questioning the linden builders' wisdom in providing newbies with the glorious vision of... i was told i was being "politely scathing". i wasn't trying to be scathing. i was making the observation that i think people coming from the welcome islands may not be equipped to handle the client lag the new welcome area seems to cause. _____________________
