I need to have a site for my web design class, and for some odd reason, I've gotten my heat set on having my own domain name too. Now, I'm in college, and as such, I don't have a lot of money to work with. I found one called iPower... um... something, and it was like $6.XX/mo for 24 months, and a free domain name, but I think it might've been only business oriented. Eh... tell me what you all think...

Ooo... would this special deal involve meeting in dark alleys with hippos clad in black?

The cheap and flexible way is to have a web server on your own PC. Install Apache (www.apache.org) and sign up for a dynamic DNS service such as www.no-ip.com. There are only so many domain names you can choose from but it's free :p

PowWeb is the one that always advertises for $7.77 per month.

As Ironchef said, it's easy enough to set up Apache on your own computer to host a site. A lot of domain registrars nowadays (I know of at least Verio and Register.com) provide domain name pointing services, so you give them an IP address (your cable/dsl modem's IP) and it will point the domain for you.

I currently host my domain with Express Networks and I've been pretty satisfied with them for the last 3+ years.
