I think Robin said on SLUniverse.com (she still can't log into the SL forums) that it would be at least tomorrow before things returned back to normal.

Friggen script kiddies, I say we give his IP to Hudson Stryker and let him handle it.

Caning is the answer. It is NOT a cruel or unusual punishment.

Too bad there was no way to consolidate the skills of SL users and launch a counterstrike. I know there are quite a few highly talented programmers, network and security engineers in our ranks.
Lindens did a great job managing the situation. I just hope the person responsible eventually gets busted and pays for what he/she did. -tito _____________________

What is a DOS attack? Is there a non-technical explanation somewhere?

Short for denial-of-service attack, a type of attack on a network that is designed to bring the network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic. Many DoS attacks, such as the Ping of Death and Teardrop attacks, exploit limitations in the TCP/IP protocols. For all known DoS attacks, there are software fixes that system administrators can install to limit the damage caused by the attacks. But, like viruses, new DoS attacks are constantly being dreamed up by hackers.

And one thing to keep in mind is that Linden Lab/Second Life is very likely NOT the target of the attack. That network provider probably has a few very large client firms.

You sure? Robin said the attack was directed specifically at SL. I haven't heard mention of any one else being affected.

DoS attacks are such a bitch. This ia a major reason why Windows SP2 is a must for home users.
Many viri / trojans these days create networks of "zombie PCs." These are typically PCs with unpatched versions of windows and no router / firewall. In other words, PCs where you plug your cable / DSL modem directly into your PC. This is akin to having sex is prison with no condom. These zombie PCs are often then hijacked, without the knowledge of the PC user, and wait for commands. Then an "army" of these zombies are used in unison for DoS attacks, or sending out spam, and other malicious activities similar in style to what many of the evil SL land barons have done. (Raising land to return object? <grin> ![]() An RL acquaintance of mine came to me begging recently saying his ISP was locking him out. When I went to diagnose his machine, I found out it was sending out 75,000 emails PER HOUR because he got jacked. The solution? Get a router / firewall (he did). You can get them for $30 or less, even with wireless these days. Then, get the data file you need of your machine. Reformat the machine, reinstall XP, and run windows update and restart (do this 4 or 5 times <grin> until there are no more Critical / Security / Driver updates to run. Only ever plug in with the DSL / Cable model plugged into the router / firewall, and then your PC plugged into the router. This is your "condom". ![]() Regards, -Flip _____________________

PS - You'll most likely notice a MAJOR performance boost by doing this. You'll also get rid of all that annoying shit that comes pre-installed with XP Home that you'll never use and can't truly completely "uninstall".
