Also worth mentioning, Will Harvey, founder of "There" (www.there.com) and "IMVU" (www.imvu.com) is also interviewed. At the time, he was an employee of There. Since then, he has left the company to start IMVU.

Watching Cory's video now...
Interesting, towards the end of the interview, the questioner asked if he'd be able to buy his own server "any time soon", and Corey said "well, no, probably not any time soon". And now we have dozens of private Sims... Granted, they're still owned by Linden Lab, but I'd bet within a year or two you'll be able to set up your own server on your own hardware at your own colo. It also seems to be that Cory is really trying to strive for, in the long long term (5 years or more), to have SL as distributed as possible; basically layed on top of the current Internet on all facets, with everyone running their own piece of the Metaverse, kinda like folks running their own web pages now. Thanks for posting this. There is a lot to take in, but it's a good idea of what the big thinking is.
On a side note, why don't we get more townhalls or audio braodcasts in world where various Lindens can talk about these issues and their vision? I'd love to hear somoene like Andrew Linden give a 30 minute talk on where he sees SL development going. |
