First WOW moment in SL?

Hi guys, I was wondering what everyone's first WOW moment in Second Life was?

For me, I was flying around in my newbie garb and spotted a nice build (done by Changeling Fate) and thought oh my, that's a lovely park - I think I'll go sit down on that bench. I had no idea that the whole area had been built by a player - I thought it was just in-game scenary. Changeling then came "home" and said hello.

"Hi", I said.

"Welcome to SL", Changeling sat down on the bench next to me (how does everyone know I'm new?)

"Thanks, I love this area, they did a good job on it!"

"Thanks, " she said, " it took me a while but it was worth it."

"Huh?", I was mystified. I didn't know people built everything I saw. She then went on to explain that everything was created by the players and offered to show me how to do it. Right before my very eyes, she made a pillow for me to sit on, textured it, and gave it to me (I have it to this day!)

WOW.

Anytime I get a little fed up with Second Life, I try to remember just how amazing this place really can be.

edit - As it turns out, Changeling's build "A Change of Fate" in Dore is still there and remains largely unchanged from how it was back then. I just visited the very bench where I met Changeling all those months ago! It's not as big as I remember. Maybe I was seeing through a child's eyes at the time :) ... Take a look if you're interested ... (Dore 197, 175) ... pic attached

Wow Jack, thanks for sharing! But your experience also makes me kinda sad 'cuz I haven't seen Changeling in awhile and wonder where she has gone. :( Hope she is more than OK.

I had many wonderful WOW moments upon entering (and even before signing up) SL, it was like one of those rollercoasters with so many loops and peaks and twists that just when you think you've hit the climax of climaxes, another one comes along, lulling you into the dynamics of variation and then pulling another trick on ya when you think you have the system figured out. ;)

I really enjoyed my first day. It was such a thrill... when I came into the Welcome Area, I burst into so many questions. OMG!!! WHAT A TRIP!!! Some peeps who have since become good friends were there. Kex Godel was one of them. Sadly, some of them have since left SL or I've not seen 'em in ages. Varick Eisenberg had a big particle suit on of some sort, arcing red and black waves... and I was like WHOA. I turned around, and there was someone dancing in a Super Mario avatar. Yeah, I pretty much hit my headroom for incoming stimuli right there. Several other cool avatars were to come throughout the next few days: notable were Psyra, Welly, Huns (meeting him at the Prim Attack table... his first word to me was "wot?";), omigosh... so many.

I was frustrated at first because my login to SL was delayed 15 min. due to the downtime that day, but I trekked on and stumbled across Stage 4. Now it's funny how small Stage 4 looks to me now, because when I first went there for Pituca's Jeopardy!, it was like a HUGE amphitheatre. And now there really is a big Greek theatre at Digifolks sim. WOWZA. And the first time I was pos-rated too, Yoshi Platini was one of the first to do it. I didn't know how to rate back to compliment... yet. But oh I'd learn quickly! (Or so I hoped.)

Also wowing me was the first time I learned to texture a prim with a diff. texture on each side. Someone unfortunately tried to rip me off -- and he did such a slow job of it too, telling me I could pay him L$100 to do so and he wouldn't even teach me "how to fish" -- but I'm glad I didn't take him up on that offer because I discovered myself.

And discovery of self... isn't that what Second Life is about? :)

OMG! HOT DAMN! YES... it's a miracle this WORKS AT ALL. Despite all the problems in the world, that we're able to interact and connect and hopefully better ourselves and each other -- that is never lost on me and I never, ever take that for granted.

And funny, your edit -- yes, things did seem bigger at the time, didn't they?

flying over the snow sims in the moonlight and landing on a woodsy mountaintop in the clouds. they were about completely empty at the time except for trees and it was all peaceful and pretty. knowing that all that was out there waiting for creative people to build amazing stuff and fill up the world and knowing that there weren't any stupid monsters to kill was a wow moment. :D

Hah, I am way too old to remember my first wow moment.
Maybe it was back when they were building the Yamato temple / Shangri-La village thingy.
I remember being distinctly impressed by the roof shape and overall look of it.

This is gonna seem silly, but what got me hooked immediately was the Appearance editor. It's still my favorite feature. (Vanity? Who, me?)

My first WOW moment -- really sort of half "wow", half "you've got to be kidding me" -- was finding the slider for Nostril Width. I mean, not that I was desperate to flare my nostrils or anything, but it was then that it sunk in just how much control we had over our appearance. After coming here from online games where you got a slider for height and a slider for weight, and and that's about it, SL won my heart; and I've been playing an elaborate game of dress-up ever since.

Nostril Width currently set at 45.

Not silly. So true. I hear ya, and am amazed too. :)

SL's extensive av customization leads to wonderful forms of self-expression.

My first WoW moment was when i went out for the very first time in SL.

Now its like..just normal.
Most clubs don't resemble to real clubs anymore , so the wow feeling is sort of gone.

For me it was seeing Catherine Omega's amazing build which sadly no longer exists.

I have to second this. Her old build in Shipley was what hooked me into SL nearly 2 years ago.

I lived right in front of it!
Sadly, by the time I got there, it didn't look anywhere near like it did in that article.

I'm embarrassed to admit, the first thing that -really- wow'd me in SL were the particle effects. These people wandering around with glowing hands and crazy lights flying all over the place... and nobody would tell the poor n00b how it was done. :o

On my first day in SL I stumbled onto Chip Midnight's build in Freelon (Tehama?). The artistry of the architecture, the rock wall outside, the translucent "ocean wave" window, the windchimes, and the ambient sounds was my "wow moment". Thanks for priming my addiction, Chip. ;)

Its been a long time and hard to remember, but the early days of the first sandbox in Olive was pretty inspiring. I remember huge sculptures by Aurican and I remember seeing Xylor working on a scanner system, he had the scanners in a visible mode so you could see each ones range. The scanners were replicating a model of the terrain with the various AV models flying around on the model itself. I was pretty awestuck by seeing his scripting in action.

Perhaps I'm arrogant but I generated my first wow moments and still do. After pulling off the use of hinges in a moving vehicle I was blown away with the craziness I was able to create next.

Granted I certainly have been overly impressed -- but initially I inspired most of my own surprise and joy.

Outside of me? When our group made a fully working missile silo. I know some fags in Jessie claimed to have one of the first inter sim ballistic missile some 5 or 10 months ago -- but that wasn't at all true. Both because someone else SURELY had to of done it before and definitely because I know we atleast beat em to it. I'm sure it was done in Beta.

Either way, our's was cooler. We had the BIG SCREEN. The process to fire it was some 9 times more complex then it needed to be... Why? Because it was cool.

hmm my WOW moment was probably when i first logged in for the first time.

i figured since it was only 10 bucks one time fee, it would not be that great, but it was worth a try (i actually decided to not play it until then since i figured it was too good of a deal to be a really awesome game)

So i logged in and i saw all da trees moving around and then noticed the millions of sliders to change yourself, but what amazed me even more was how you could make YOUR OWN CLOTHES for free. not NEARLY as expensive as there.com or any other crazy expensive games. then i saw a bunch of people riding by on a large cruise boat, it looked awesome (but to this day i still wonder - this was on newbie island, which i thought you could get back to once you leave it, yet there was a bunch of people on the boat, and they definately didnt seem like newbies? :\ ) I tried to catch up with the boat but i missed it and couldn't find it again. Finally somehow i ended up in the aqua galleria, met a few cool people with nice clothes and couldn't wait to start making my own clothes. so the first day i started making clothes and to this day i am STILL making clothes :D

okee there is my story isnt it so touching??? *tear*
