Just kidding. :)

I'm loving Second Life more than I ever expected, these days. This technology has to be some of the most fun I have ever, ever had. In the face of all the recent whining, I'm going to share some of the things that make me love Second Life -- things that compel me to stay forever. Feel free to contribute your own. (If you want to whine about how everything sucks and that you're going to leave, there are other threads in which you can do so -- please don't do it here.)

1. Neat People

Man, there are some neat people around the grid. At least once a week I'll bump into someone in my travels who absolutely blows me away in terms of their creativity and accomplishment. Every time I think I'm comfortable with the coolest things on the grid, I'll see something that makes me say "Damn!" and I HAVE to pull out the ratings window. Being in constant contact with really creative minds is really good for me.

2. Robots

Man! Robots are so neat! And they're getting better and better! I make my own line of robot avatars, and I'm really glad to see others join the cybernetics game! Some of these things are so intricate and well-planned, it makes my jaw drop. I'm a real scifi nerd and I love to see some well-made future schwag on the grid.

3. I Can Do It!

With a bit of dedication, some smart friends and plenty of curiosity, I've been able to make really cool stuff! Really fun stuff! I mean, I'm not at all skilled at 3D or computer scripting, but you know, SL makes solid results really accessible to me. Is everything about SL something you can pick up in an evening? Certainly not. But I'm astonished at how well some of this really complex stuff has been made available to the layperson.

Yeah, sometimes there are hiccups. But this is new technology and it's worth it for me. Second Life is *fun*. Cut the dramatic crap and enjoy this incredible opportunity! :D

Hey En,

I think I met you last night at the Elbow Room. You were dressed up like JC Denton right? Kickass costume :)

Awww, yeah. Deus Ex foreva! That was me! Easily my favorite piece of entertainment of all time. I really didn't want the game to end, so I decided I'd steal JC's clothes for my Second Life. :)

I think it's worked out really, really well for you, Enabran. I'm surprised no one else did it, but then, upon coming to know you, I'm really happy you did! My memories of DX live on... through you...

Lovely post. How positive! :)

You are just so wrong.

What I hate:

The Fun of chatting with people. I mean who would want to make friends with any one.

Getting out of the house even if it’s only virtual is just not something some one should do. I mean going out and having fun is just WRONG.

Freedom to do what you want is wrong. They should start banning people and make better rules.

Flying around like a witch/supperhearo should be banned it’s of the devil.

OK sorry that was just to much fun.

I agree with most of what you said. I two and a Sci/Fi geek (What do you think of the new Battlestar Galaxtica? What do you think of the two SG? What about Andromeda? Man Friday is Geek night my wife runs and gets her books out and reads, LOL) but I am not down with the robo look. Give me a humanized look any day.

Really I will list what I like.

Fun chatting. I use to be a big time IRC person. This is just so much better. I mean it adds a 3D to your chatting. It’s great!!

Getting out of the house. I have two little kids. I can’t go out to the bars I can’t go out with the gang like I want or use to. This is a great way to have some of that. Can’t wait for that next step Sony is doing with beaming stuff in to your brain. WOW could SL become just that much cooler!!

Freedom. I played UO, I have friends in to CoH. The problem with them is after you are done killing this or fighting that you don’t really have any thing to do. In UO I was a minor / blacksmith (main charter) and would make things but really I didn’t make any thing I just had my guy do something that others could do. This is true creation.

Bing more then you are. As a Witch I can tell you we don’t really fly on broom sticks. As a person that knows more then one supper hero I can tell you they don’t have Supper Powers (I am talking about Doc, Nurses, Cops, Firefighters…est.). It’s great to be able to fly. You can do any thing. I love flying really high up and then just shutting the flying off. I don’t know why maybe I am sick, OK I am sick but that is something totally different.

We have the freedom to make this game what we want. Lets do it and get off the whining like my little 6 year old girl. Man I don’t let her get away with it, why would I want to deal with it form any one else.

Enabran Templar, WELL SAID!!! WELL SAID!!

Okay, then, both of you have inspired #4.

4. I Can Wear JC Denton's Clothes

He's the most bad ass video game protagonist of all time. In SL, I can wear his trademark body armor and futuristic cop pants!

I loved Deus Ex so much. And while I liked the sequel, I couldn't help but feel so let down by it. It was a mess. But at least I got to play a female Denton.

How much did I love Deus Ex? I was playing it during my last week living in Michigan, when I should have spent more time packing my things. I moved back to MA, and I left a bunch of stuff in storage. Including my Deus Ex disks. Or so I thought. So I buy a whole new copy of Deus Ex, finish it..and it turns out I was only an hour away from the very end ANYHOW!!! And then, I find out I didn't put my DX disc in storage, so I just paid $45 for nothing.

But I regret nothing!!!

DX is my favorite game, right on the same level with Fallout 2 and System Shock 2

Here is the really telling question: how many times have you replayed DX from the beginning? For me, it's eight. I loved that game so damn much. Such a gripping story. You're right, too: the sequel lacked a certain magic. I wasn't as enthralled and wrapped up in the story. With that said, how cool was it to see Liberty Island worn by 20 years of neglect? I felt really odd wistfullness as I wandered among the ruins of UNATCO and the statue.

If you drop by Templar Botworks in Kaili, you'll hear a track of music from Deus Ex playing as the parcel's sole music stream. :D

Well, yeah, of course SL can be fun if you have an "upbeat" attitude. But what if I want to play SL my way, i.e. sullenly? What then, little mister? Huh?

Enabran!

You're leaving? Yay! I mean, awwww....

Um, before you sign off forever, could you please drop the full-priv version of your shiny new $750 toy on me? Oh, and any prototypes and blueprints you won't be finishing.

And the outfit you had on at the Elbow Room last night, kthx and g/l.

*reads further*

Aww...you're staying? I mean, yay!

*goes back to rolling pennies* :D

"Screw everybody" would be a great name for an SL escort service. I'm just going to throw that out for anyone who wants to start that business up.

I agree with all the cool things about SL- but one of the best things about it for me is what i have learned. I never used Photoshop or even heard of Poser before i came to SL. But my motivation to bring what i envision into world made me learn how to use both of those things.

Everyday i learn something new, either while in world or making something to bring in. 9 months ago i was an average PC user- knew my way around the internet, Word and my e-mail.
Now i build virtual towns and i know that whatever i need to make the builds more interesting places, i can make myself. :D Now, if i can only find a way to enlarge my prim allowance...

So, from being able to open my own e-mail  to building my own sim- (if you want to check it out, it's called Verloren) is a pretty nifty leap.
I suppose i could have spent my money on taking RL classes in Photoshop or Poser, but this way was much more fun. :p

Ok Enabran, I'm going to take this opportunity to tell your robots, then, because maybe your nearly-intelligent or maybe superior-intelligent robots will listen to me...I'm not a socialist.

I'm not a socialist, OK? Robots? Hello?

Versu, excellent point! SL is great from a professional/creative standpoint because it really pushes you to get better at certain software skills. My Photoshop game has been improved tremendously because I've got a day-to-day use for it now.

"Contentment baron." Now there's a delightful accusatory label. :)

I clicked on this thread because I had a suspicion about what kind of thread it really was-- and I was right. :D I like the creation tools -- can't add much to what Enabran wrote, except that I came here looking for a way to create interactive multiplayer games using biofeedback, and now a bunch of us are actually doing it. Sure, some of the tools are buggy, and some just whet my appetite for even more flexibility, but I'm able to do so much here that I've never been able to do with other tools. And I've met a host of really fabulous people here.

I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement. I post regularly on the Feature Requests thread, and I file bugs like everyone else. But there's a lot to value here. Those of us who do value what's here need to continue to work constructively with LL to make SL even better, not threaten to stomp out everytime LL tries to stretch to new frontiers and falters a bit in the process.

Thanks, Enebran, for starting this thread.

DX is my favorite game, right on the same level with Fallout 2 and System Shock 2

Give me a kiss to build a dream on
And my imagination will thrive upon that kiss
Sweetheart, I ask no more than this
A kiss to build a dream on ... (L. Armstrong)

hehe i guess that song works for Fallout 2 and SL both ... ^^

Nothing like a world only limited by imagination.
