(disclaimer: tried searching for related threads, didn't find one; therefor, i've started this one)
-

i've just finished reading an article in the Real Estate 101 section of Dwell magazine. (such a fitting name.. lol)

congrats to Troy Vogel on his spotlight, as well as Paolo Portocarrero for his part in this article. Philip offered a few words as well, nothing earth/SL shattering, but still.. it's in there.

an enjoyable read and fairly well written to boot. i had started to browse through the magazine to see if it was architecturally inspirational enough, in concern of building in SL, for me to purcahse said publication. to my surprise i found there was a 3 page article about "unreal estate", the virtual market. while it's not soley about Second Life, it is the main focus. so, of course i had to buy it! :D

for those interested, it's the september ish of Dwell.

congrats again guys!

Dwell is my favorite architecture rag and they are located just around the corner from LL.

Yes, Dwell is very cool. They don't just focus on modernist architecture for the sake of aesthetics, but deal with how structures solve problems of efficiency, environmental impact, budget and function.

I couldn't find this article on the web site; did you mean that it was on there? Or just in the magazine itself?

just in the mag

the article isn't available on the Dwell site, sorry.. i should have clarified that point.

i offered the link for anyone who doesn't know the magazine or was interested in more info about it.. or simply to know what cover to look for wherever they shop for magazines.

it is a great one at that.. i haven't read anything else in it yet.. but i plan to.

seems like the type of mag that SL would do well to have their own version of! (i hope this inspires someone to make it.. my plate is way too full.. heck, i'm still working on things from a year ago! lol..

Yeah - when I saw the title, I thought Dwell WAS an SL magazine!

And what a perfect name it would be for one, too.

i was dissapointed by this comment:

"Sophisticated software doesn't necessarily translate into sophisticated design online. Avatars seem to resort to cliched design tropes and postmodernism is alive and well in the virtual world."

The author overlooks that what Dwell magazine promotes - the fetishization and marketing of "shi-shi modernism" - is designed by professional architects and industrial designers, while what one observes in the SL is a landscape developed by hobbiests. It's an unfair criticism. Secondly, she overlooked the works of very skilled sl-architects, even modernist Dwell junkies like Juro and Barnes. I would have expected an architecture magazine to seek out and talk about players who have taken on the role of architect or designer in world.

Anyway, those were just my most immediate thoughts on the article. Besides that It was a fun read.

But I'll be happier when THESE guys do a bit on SL:

But then, of course, they haven't yet.
