Knoppix is pretty amazing. I guy I met through work knows the guy who wrote it, so he got me a copy of the distrib.

It's Linux, but it runs entirely off of CD rom. Entirely. No installation at all. You drop in the CD, reboot, and in about 3 minutes you are looking at a Linux desktop, with some office apps, browsers, the whole bit. I wrote a little java code on it and ran it, no problems (it comes with a dev tool!).

I like linux, but as a technology it has seldom amazed me (it's a great alternative OS, but aside from that eh). I'm pretty much in awe of how well this works. You don't need a super machine at all to run it, in fact not by a long shot. It just has to be able to boot from CD. I'm sure it has limits of course, but jeez what a great learning tool and introduction to the Linux environment, and/or great way to retool old machines on the hurry up that won't run new Windows.

Just figured you Linux heads out there may be interested in looking it up if you didn't know about it.

Yup, Knoppix is a great instant-Linux. Apart from using it for hardware testing, it's also great for threatening my smartass lusers with :)

"I want a faster computer, this one sucks. Why are we using Windows, I watched this TV show and they had this lunix thing and they say Lunix is much better and also free, why aren't we using Lunix!?!??"

"Ok, I'll be right there and we'll have Linux running on your laptop in just a few minutes - and since it's so much better, you won't have to call support ever again, right?"

"Uhm..."

Excuse me if this is ignorant, but are you able to do any work with it? Aren't the filesystems incompatible? Can you install software and use it?

I wonder if this would work with VMware... Hmm...

Knoppix can read/write to FAT/FAT32 partitions and it's possible to read from NTFS partitions but you cannot write as of yet. I'm not sure if knoppix comes with that capability but I'm sure there's a LiveCD that does.

You get the whole OpenOffice suite as well as the Gimp, various network tools, web browsers, etc. so you can be quite productive with just the LiveCD. Program load times are pretty poor however since your CD-ROM is slow compared to your HD.

If knoppix doesn't do it for you, you can try Mepis, Mophix, Slax, even Lindows has a LiveCD now.
