You may have developed a sensitivity. As we age, we can actually become sensitized to things which never affected us previously.
A quick google possibly points to limonene, a chemical in the peel, which is also extracted and purified and used in cleaning agents. It seems some folks are allergic to limonene.
If you haven't been overcome by it yet, you'll probably be fine.

You did rinse it off before you ate it right? If not, maybe you did get some type of pesticide or fertilizer in your mouth. I don't think you could ingest enough to do more than make your mouth feel odd though.
As far as the possible allergy to limonene goes, maybe this was a more potent orange? I don't know.

If I chew on an orange peel, I'll get the same sort of numb, tingly sensation. I'm guessing it's just the oils in the peel. Or that limosine stuff... or something. Um... yeah. But I've always gotten that from orange peel. S'probably nothing to worry about. Probably. Um... is that your bottom lip on the floor over there?

Man, if that's all you're allergic to....not to be rude or nasty or anything, but DON'T COMPLAIN! Ya don't wanna see some of us who have "Hay Fever" on the bad days without pills... it can quite literally stop you from doing whatever you're trying to do at the time. UGh!

You just ate an orange, I can tell because you have skin all over your face.

From: billy Madison Acid is caustic.. i didnt say it burnt my mouth i said it made it numb! Yes, acid is caustic. But, citric acid is very midly caustic. Far too weak to do any real damage. But, it WILL make your skin tingle. Does the same to me.

I've had that same reaction ever since I was a little girl, I thought it was normal and happened to everybody. I never questioned it, just assumed it was the acid in the peel.

It probably is the limonene oil in the peel causing that sensation. It's a pretty sturdy organic solvent, so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it made one's lips tingle a bit.
