WTF is Nomic?

Nomic is a game with a twist. To start with the only thing the rules tell you is ho to change the rules. They dont even tell you how to win. Everything has to be agreed by the players.

In Calvin and Hobbs terms, its Calvinball with written rules

In boardgame terms, its you and your friends sitting around a blank board with a deck of blank cards and a pen designing your own game (Except that like Calvinball, your playing the game at the same time)

In video game terms, its a blank 3d landscape, a chat window and a set of tools to allow you to create your own game. Hmm, sounds familiar.

All the initial rules say is that players make proposals to change the rules and other players vote on them. If a proposal gets enough votes, the changes are made to the rules, if not, the proposal is discarded. If a players proposal is accepted, they get a point. Thats it.

So how do you play?

1: Read the rules! Nomc is all about rules. Get the rules wrong and at best, your proposal will be ignored. At worst, you could end up as Eggy's sex slave (Whether or not you are shared is still to be decided)
2: Read the current proposals and vote on them. Tip if you vote yes to proposals that you dont care about, perhaps the author will vote for yours in exchange.
3: Make your own proposals. Tip no one is going to vote for a rule that says you win. Make proposals that benefit everyone (Of course its best to have a secret plan on how you can use that rule to your advantage)
4: The key is co-operation, Proposals that no one votes on can be fun, but wont win you the game.

Double line, following the 1493 Victoria accords, and the 1997 Cannon Street reversal.

I dont like the 1997 Cannon Street Reversal. Its too easy to get caught in a cross line reversal that leaves the game unresolveable.

The problem is that since those rules were written, the new cross london link has changed The King's Cross layout.

I get your point. Maybe we could ban the Circle Line as if using the '23 Roman-Road rule, or go with the Docklands Resolution of 2002 forcing a return to Becton if your route gets within 12 miles of the DLR.

I like the idea of the Dockland resolution. I have some good strategies from Becton. Obviously Im not going to give out all my secrets. Sufficient to say that Marble Arch is not the only place where you can do Humph gambit. (remember TBT v's BC 1989?)

How does the '23 Roman-Road rule work with the 1493 Victoria accords?

It doesn't really, we'd have to modify.
And yes, the '89 situation was a classic, I've not seen a move like that since the famous 1963 series, which by now has passed into legend as a completely preposterous interpritation of the Liverpool Street Bind. I was flabberghasted and needed to sit down with a cup of tea and an A-Z just to resolve the play. I hope to be that good one day.

You heard the 63 series live!! Wow, I remember my Grandad talking about them. Poor Grandad, he never really got his head around the concept of the Docklands Light Railway.

However, I'm not going to be distracted, we have given Kris a good flavour of the game. I must go back and attemd to the monster I seem to have created.
