I have seen the signs and the end is nigh! Behold that which shall undo ye SL. It is Dark and Light.

Dark and Light promises ambitious graphics and a 40,000 km² gameworld without any loading! Check out the screen shots -- it's phenomenal. My favorite shots are of the beautiful sunsets, the vast landscape, and the pictures of characters trudging through knee-deep snow (and land not buried in sprawl). ;)

Check out the movies online too, especially the Snow Shielder video. If only skiing were like that in SL. :D

How can a game that you play based on someone elses story line, come close to be compared with SL??

SL free form, building what you need, do anything...

Other game like Dark & Light, kill, gain levels, follow the paths given by the creator..not free forms..

So SL, Dark & Light so different that it could not possibly kill SL...

As I play SL to chat, having fun, relax and build, etc.....I play other games for different reasons (kill, destroy, whatever..lol)

LOL, SL's got the sexballs (and every other variety of user-dreated object) so it still wins hands down.

It sure would be wonderful to have SL set in that kind of environment though. *sigh*

You know, I wonder if when LL looks at these pictures they feel the same way we do when we look at pictures of Chinatown. ;)

But it's not the same thing, Ulrika. It's like saying... I don't know... "Poker is a chess killer".

I hope their new rendering engine will make SL look pretier, probably not as pretty as this game though but let's hope.

I agree with Michael Martinez, SL and Dark and Light are so different it doesn't compare. It's like comparing IRC with Quake.

I wonder how the rats you fight in Dark Light when a noob are called... "Giant Rat"? "Rat"? "Rabbid Rat"? :)

Oh, I know that this world will not have the same kind of freedom that SL will and is hardly a replacement. However, according to the Ulrika Hand Book, on page seven it clearly states that all posts, even if they are just informative, must be phrased in the form of a controversy. ;)

Does anyone know if Dark & Light stores graphics info client side or if it is streamed?

That has always been the trade-off with SL, not having cutting edge graphics due to the fact it has to be streamed to your PC. Isn't Phillip the guy who helped Real develop and/or improve streaming technologically? So it is no suprise to me that SL is based around streaming. Not to mention that we are protected more against duping and hacking issues because we have very little stored locally. The small install is also a nice thing.

WoW is FOUR CDs. Then you start patching. I am willing to bet that D & L's installation wont come from a 22mb download. I guess I just accept that cutting edge, linear MMOGs will have better graphics. That said I am eager for Havok 2 to arrive.

I'm pretty sure Philip is the guy that DID the Real streaming tech.

Ulrika,

World of Warcraft has stunning graphics that far surpass SL in terms of quality in some ways - and many people from SL play it - but it is not an "sl killer" because it is a totally different environment and purpose. There is no other environment like SL available - There and SL compete in some minor ways, but SL blows it out of the water overall. I am looking forward to Dark & Light, but in terms of graphics, it is nothing that new - World of Warcraft has the most stunning art direction I have ever seen in a game, and 300k+ members already - yet it has not had a negative effect on SL. No worries on Dark & Light.

I am concerned that a game will not say what its minimun requirments are for computers in order to play the game.

Most worlds I know of clearly state a level which your computer must meet or exceed to play. Dark and Light does not. It is a total mystery what type of processor, ram, video card hardrive space etc is needed for the game and therefore I will not be playing.

Sys Reqs are like a price tag. If you have to ask, you can't afford it. :) And while SL may get prettier landscapes, we still have joe schmoes building. And that's not to knock anyone. We got great people here. But the fact is, WoW has content that looks like someone paid a lot of money for it, and SL has content that looks like it was free (on the average).

But because our content is what it is, and there's is what IT is... we will always get bored with theirs before we get bored of ours. And even when we do, there will always be more coming :)

I love this game.

ahhh it's all just more pixels until the VR helmets come out.

That's the next big step.

A lot of games in early beta don't say this, Magnum. Because it's not really known yet. The engine is still being developed, the world developed, poly counts and view distances and textures resolutions and so forth finalized.

Still I would like to know what the System Requirements are. If they are not provided then it means someone has something to hide, and not that you do not have the money to afford it. My computer is thus:

2.5GHz processor
1GB Ram
128 MB Nvidia Separate Video ram
180 GB Hard drive
Ethernet cable to router to cable modem to cable company

that is quite a bit. and if Dark and Light needs more... Too Bad. Because this machine I am on was built especially for Second Life.

Ok I did not know they were that early into Beta.

Makes sense now.
