I design my own clothing, but since I am a perfectionist (i.e. Obsessive Compulsive :p ), I can't seem to make them good enough. I have read that others have made their own clothing templates and I was wondering if there were any tips that you clothing makers can give others so that they can learn to make better clothing. I would personally like tips on making better templates so that I can try to make a template myself. Any tips? :)

Hi Kats :) I'll be happy to give you some pointers. There's really no simple way to make a good template so be prepared to spend a lot of time and uploads on them. My main purpose for making mine was to make it easier to match details across the seams. What I did was to make a simple grid and lay it over the existing templates. I made every 3rd or 4th line color coded and made sure that there were the same number of lines from top to bottom on both the front and back templates (they're different sizes which makes seam matching no easy thing). Then I uploaded my first draft and used it as the texture for clothing. I then took screenshots of all the seams. Then I went back into photoshop and adjusted the grid lines to compensate for the distortions and seams mismatch. I kept doing this back and forth until I had an acceptable grid with all the lines matching across all the seams. It took about 40-50 versions for both the upper and lower body. It was a ton of work, but it saves me so much time now that it was well worth the effort. If you want to give me a yell in game I'll be happy to show you mine :)

Thank you for the tip, Chip. I had already started making a grid, but it still didn't look right. I will definitely keep trying. I'll contact you ingame to see your masterpiece. :)

I haven't made myself any templates, but here is what I did to make life a little easier:

I uploaded all of the mesh textures into the game, created new clothing made from the textures (you look really silly doing this, so go somewhere private :) ) then took loads and loads and loads of screenshots from all different angles (using the ` key so it saves on the hard disk). Try using different av shapes too to get an idea of how different proportions affect things.

Then when I'm creating clothing, I can look back on the screenshots to get a better idea of where seams line up, and how textures will stretch.
