What's with boardman?

I live right next to boardman, and I'm becoming mildly distressed at seeing a bunch of random buildings popping up in it. Pardon my ignorance, but aren't you only supposed to have the prefab housing supplied in the kiosk? Since when are people allowed to build whatever in Boardman?

I'm just wondering, is all... when i started back in july, I tried building there and was informed that I couldn't, only prefab housing was allowed. Has this changed?

prefab homes in boardman and other theme/newbie areas
12-26-2003 12:00
I believe it is because of the current problem with the prefabs being over the prim limit or something like that...it was stated that this will be fixed on or around January 12th...Maybe I am incorrect but I think I read something about it somewhere :)

While it's amusing, it's also quite frustrating to the poor folks who live there.

It may be the the lindens temporaily dropped the restrictions on what you could build, as a band-aid.

At least it looks like most people are keeping reasonable looking.

The restrictions of pre-fabs were supposedly dropped before 1.1

But people took it for granted... Its still suppose to be housing structures..

I think there is a purple store somewhere in there now..

My apologies...

Maintaining Boardman is part of my responsibilities. Unfortunately, I've been on vacation for the last week (and continue to be so until the 1st). However, I have access to Second Life tonight, so I'll be sure to go over Boardman and make sure guidelines are being followed.

Here (to my knowledge) is the current Boardman guidelines:

From: someone

Boardman
=====

Welcome to Boardman! Boardman is a controlled building community. A small suburbian area divided into cozy parcels, Boardman is the perfect place to build your home if you're looking for a nice, quiet region without the stores and looming towers you might find building elsewhere.

Here are some helpful guidelines to help maintain Boardman:

You may only buy and own one plot.
You must purchase the entire 24x24 square plot of land.
You need to be in Second Life for at least 3 days before buying land here.

Your build in Boardman MUST be a conventional home. This means that stores, danceclubs, sheep farms, and any other non-house builds are not permitted within Boardman. You may freely use the Mini-House-in-a-Box ? as your main building. This item is for sale at the supply stores located around the perimeter of this region. You can modify it, change textures, etc. You can add accessories like landscaping.

We encourage people who share interests or times when they are online to move in together. Before moving in you may want to chat up your potential neighbors. If they aren't around you may want to check the "I am.." note card dispenser at their plot or right click on an object they own, select Edit, select More, click on Profile. If your neighbors are around, then just right click on them and select Profile.

After you move in, make sure your own profile is filled out.You can also make a note card describing your own interests and place it in the "I am..." dispenser next to each plot.

**Note: the following zoning regulations will be enforced:
* No terraforming. The land stays the way it is.
* No buildings taller than 15 meters
* You must build within your own property lines.
* No objects for sale, except within the stalls in the center of the region.
* No signs permitted.
* Noisy or flashing textures, particles, excessive and/or looping sounds, or any script that puts unnecessary strain on the region will be removed.

This region is located within a PG-Rated territory. All applicable rules, laws and community standards apply.

Are the guide lines going to be the same in Brown as they are in Boardman. We also have the same sort of things happening there. What would be the advantage of sharing the plot with others since each one can only hold 106 prims no matter who may build them =(. This seems to also include any thing that was built by a Linden as well. My land in brown was counting the stall walls around it. Make no sense to me at all that a plot that can only contain 3 prims is counting the 7 prims to build the walls and it carried over to my " house " plot.

That's nothing; the standard tents have too many prims for DeHaro and Green.

Why do the stalls take *SEVEN* prims?

A three-walled square structure can be done with ONE hollowed-out 25% cut prim.

Not the open-air stalls, Kex. We're talking about the (IMO useless and un-called for) campgrounds.

I don't think LL has re-distributed their land's primes. I noticed in Kissling, where there is a huge amount of LL land, that if you look at the "about land" blip on Gov. Linden's land, he has like 8000 objects available. I am sure this is probably the same in other areas where there is a large amount of LL land.

Hmmm...have I broken the rule un-wittingly?
01-08-2004 03:06
Hi,

I only came into SL yesterday and flew around to get some land. I purchased a 480m2 block in Boardman which, by my reckoning isn't the 24 x 24 size that it should be. Obviously, I haven't been in SL for 3 days either. This is going on the rules that Lee Linden posted.

So, can I expect to get turfed out? Should I sell up (mind you, surely then I'd be breaking the rules as it's not a 24 x 24 plot that I have)?

I'm confused as I didn't know that there were building regulations for the different areas (sims?). I had a lot of help from people about how to buy land, but nobody mentioned that there were certainly rules for different places, so any idea what I should do now? Oh and where can I find the building regs for all the different areas (I understand the PG/M thing, but didn't know it extended beyond that).

sorry to be a pain but has anybody got any definitive answers on what I should do in my current situation (see above post). I don't want to go building if I'm just going to have to move anyway.

boardman and brown have the restrictions that buildings must be house-like structures. the primitives can only be eight meters in length in any direction. no stores, casinos or such are allowed.

deharo and green are campgrounds. those lots can only hold tents and cabins.

all four sims allow an av to own one plot of land, however, that plot may be any size and shape now.

other restricted sims are: the vehicle sims which allow no building at all; luna (the new linden shopping complex); coney (the lindeworld amusement sim currently empty); and darkwood (a medieval rpg theme sim).

Hi, and thank you for your reply, that helps to remove the blur on what the current rules are. I'm curious about this part of what you said:

From: someone
the primitives can only be eight meters in length in any direction

Does this mean that in other areas without this restriction that primitives can be any length you like? I just presumed it was a limit in the designer.

prims are always limited to ten meter dimensions. that's an engine rule. feel free to help us lobby an increase there.

i believe the boardman & brown eight meter restriction keeps buildings from being too large to damage the "residential" atmosphere.

I didn't read anything that said that there was a limit of 8 meters on anything other then height and that has now been changed to 15 meters. But it still has to be a suburbian style house structure.
