Let's name the New Continent!

I think it's time to give it a name. It's not so new anymore and we should come up with something.

Torley said it should be called Atoll from the Magellan diary, but isn't atoll the name of a geographical feature?

Perhaps it should just be called Magellan?

OK, I can't help thinking of Dragon's Cove, but it doesn't have to be that way.

I imagine the Lindens have always thought up the names of the sims in SL and never had the players name anything?

My vote is for the name, Kalos.

Someone pointed out that all the sims up there are names of varieties of butterflies.
A collective name for a group of butterflies is called a 'Kaleidoscope'.
The partial etymology of Kaleidoscope is Greek from the word, Kalos, meaning beautiful.

"My friend just got a nice piece of land in Modest."
"Modest? Where is that?"
"Its way up north, up in the Kalos Region."

I like Kalos a lot, another possibility might be Chrysalis, smybolic of the way that they seemed to unfold.

I love that idea, Loki.

When we met that time at the Moth Temple to hear Xenon's talk, I was looking all over for the name of moths in Latin or Greek, some kind of more exotic term, not the word of an individual type of moth, but some word like that.

I had no idea that the word kaleidoscope came from the idea of butterflies/moths like that. It would capture the kaleidoscope of textures there in the new world.

Mariposa? Papillon? Both mean butterfly, in Spanish, then French. :)

Didn't they just name the sims after streets in San Francisco?

Hrm... It's late and all I can think of is Krull: The Conqueror. :(

Hmm... How about The Not-So-New Continent?

Well, let's name the old continent, then while we are at it!

Mariposa is good, as is Papillon, but both are so overused already and already have connotations with a RL jazz festival and a movie. I like Loki's suggestion precisely because it isn't overused and doesn't have instant RL assocations.

Things like Xanadu, Shangrila, Bali Hai, etc. are all good, but also have a lot of RL connotations, and I was thinking that the moth thing, since the Lindens bothered to come up with it, would be a good direction to go to try to get something that doesn't already have RL connotations hooked up to it.

I refer to The Core, The Southern Continent, The Snow Sims, The Islands, The Lake District and That New Continent.

It seems to me that we need to name them all. We never settled on a name for the world either other than calling it The Grid.

All Hail The Central Grid
All Hail The Central Asset
All Hail The Central Login
So Say We All

Yeah.. I'm always surprised that the Linden's don't come out with a cool map of the world with all the lakes / mountains / etc named.

excellent suggestion, Loki! i think Kalos rings of old and mystical and wonders of beauty. i believe the new continent will solidify much less haphazardly than "Continent 1".. having a name such as Kalos would inspire such to pass as well.

as far as naming other things.. absolutely. it would be grest to have continent names, mountain ridge names, mountain names, lakes, etc..

i'll probably go off and research some names and return with a new thread for the discussion of all the names for everything.

I thought it had a name? Hmm...

Magellan.

I'll always refer to it as "That northern continent".

Mothtopia is fun too.
