what else?
I've spen the last few days wandering around and all I have been able to find is malls, clubs, tringo games, and newbie classes that teach you how to build more malls and clubs. I'm not trying to bash anyone since I might have overlooked something. Am I missing something or is this really all there is?

Actually, SL's greatest asset would probably be the people you will meet!

Thankfully the dreaded clubisinomall isnt all SL has to offer - if it was the case, I'd have left a long long time ago. SL is a fantastic 3D platform that is occasionally realised - if you take a look at the work the Bedazzle team does - it's a great example. SL's probably best aspect is the collaborative development one - there's usually a few teams of people looking for more members, learning how to develop with SL is one of the best things you can do. -Adam

I'm here just to make stuff and hang out with like-minded individuals. It might seem daunting, but you can completely avoid most clubs/malls/tringo areas in-world. I haven't seen a tringo area yet, in fact. Welcome to SL LF

You can build things besides clubs and malls and get fairly instant feedback from people you've never met. That's not bad. Sometimes you meet interesting people who are different from you. That's good. And you get to watch something that might be the metaverse or the third internet, but probably not, mature. So far that's been kind of depressing and kind of exciting, but I haven't been here that long.

If I am informed properly....
Tringo is an SL creation. Tringo never existed outside of SL and now can only be found in SL. Maybe I'm missing something, but Tringo has to be the most popular SL creation so far. It's fun, addicting and unique to SL. What's wrong with that?

Seraphim, a warm welcome to Second Life. OMG there is tons and TONS of stuff here... if there wasn't, I'd be the first one to leave. I find myself coming across the most wonderful things when I least expect them, and sometimes when I do expect a grand adventure, I get 'em too. A lot of my discoveries come from knowing others and then accompanying them to their homes or favorite locations of theirs, where pandemonium can break out, and usually does -- if we're feelin' especially crazy! There are sooo many connections in here. My mere recommendation is to strike up conversations with strangers: sure, you'll get some rude brush-offs and people who don't wanna talk, but keep at it, because engaging conversations will lead into wonderful friendships that you'll treasure emotionally. People you can relate to, who bond with you. And that means, they're no longer strangers! Also, take the time to customize your avatar to the fullest extent that it is truely a representative emissary of your creative expressions, and that you sometimes fly to random places on the map, or even walk around (NO flying!) to see what you come across next. Learn about SL history, read New World Notes: http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/And heyo, I've got a blog of my own if you're curious about my personal experiences -- link is down below in my sigline. Tringo's great fun enjoyed by oldbies and newbies and peeps in between alike (which makes it sort of a "great uniter" game in my mind)... you can also hit the snow sims and go snowboarding like I did for the first time the other day (ask Ben Linden for the gear), explore Gibson (near by the Ahern Welcome Area!) for the cyberpunk treasury of Tyrell Corp., check out what you haven't that's been mentioned above by my friends... I know I have!... and y'know, just enjoy your Second Life on a day-to-day basis!

A -great- way of finding things is to talk to people and look at their profile for 'picks'.. and see what curiosities are there. I suggest my profile for at least three genuinely interesting builds/things.
And as Roberta said, there are TONS of games on the wiki now, more than 30 non-casino and about 40 casino games. Very much recommend you have a look, grab a mate and try some of them out.

Champie I have nothing against Tringo in and of itself...I'm not an addict, but it's fun to drop in and play once in a while :) The part that annoys people is the fact that once it started getting popular, everyone and their alt apparently went "Oooh, Me too!" and somewhat mindlessly rushed to buy a set, host events and rake in the dwell, the same way many people do with clubs and malls. Most people would much rather copy someone else's innovation than try to innovate on their own, sadly. Of course, some Tringo games are hosted by Tringo addicts themselves who just couldn't get enough. >:)

I haven't seen a tringo area yet, in fact. One day, I'm going to go to Tringo and then send an IM to Lordfly: "Hi! I'm at the amazing build contest! L$1000 to the person who can build the most beautiful skyscraper in 60 minutes, and there's no prim limit! You have to enter - can I send you a tp?" We'll get you hooked yet

The event listings are kinda the "classifieds" of SL. They are simply a listing of what things people choose to advertise. They are not a comprehensive listing of everything that goes on in SL. There's a local paper in my town call the LA Weekly. If you looked at the ads in that paper, you might think Los Angeles was inhabited solely by plastic surgeons and massage therapists Depending on the places you look, you could miss everything thats fun, exciting and diverse about Los Angeles. And that goes double for SL. Right now the search tools just dont do the diversity and scope of SL justice. So yes, we need to develop better tools for residents to find what they are interested in, not merely what is being advertised. But in the meantime, the best way to really understand SL, is to explore it. I wish I could tell you specifically what you should go look at, but, in a way, experiencing SL is a process that reveals as much about you as it does about the world. What you ultimately see depends on what you bring to the experience. If you're an artist, you'll be drawn to the artistic. If you're an entrepreneur, you'll be drawn to the business opportunities. If you're horny, you're be drawn to naked parties. Just don't expect to "get" SL at a glance. It's a work in progress reflecting the ideas, interests and passions of many very different people. And if you don't see what you're looking for, feel free to create it yourself and share your vision with us!

Seraphim Visit this web site and get a listing of all of SL's Parks and Recreation areas: http://www.gabrielguyer.com/slparksandrec/One of my objectives while in world and not creating is to visit all the parks listed in SL. If you want an in world list, visit Karuna Nursery (listed in places) and find the big orange mushroom and it will dispense an in world list to you. If you are into camping, you are welcome to say a couple of days at the camp site I have there. Rose
