My mother is mostly crazy, and about to either go to jail or kill herself. She sent me 5 gold rings of hers, 2 being a wedding/engagement set, these rings are worth thousands of dollars. Should I sell them or keep them for sentimental value or in case she ever wants them back? What would you do?

At least for the immediate term, I would not sell them. What do you think her intentions were in giving them to you? Do you think she would be hurt or offended if she found out they had been sold? I understand she may be going through a mental health crisis, but that may only be a temporary situation. Hold on to them, at least for now.

Thanks for the imput. I agree that I should wait a while as I was just given them. Her getting better in not going to happen anytime in the near future, if she is even alive as we speak, but yeah it might still hurt her feelings. She's been missing for a week now, so who knows what will come of this.

Tiaragwin - The situation with your mom is very sad. I think that you should hold onto the rings because maybe they were the only part of herself she could possibly give you. Someday, you may have a daughter and want to give them to her - or someday you may have a desperate situation that they bail you out of.
I hope she turns up and is not ill or in trouble. ** Hugs ** Rose _____________________

Actually I do have a daughter, and I wouldn't give them to her. I hope she doesn't have to deal with much of her grandmother ( my mother ) at all. My mother has caused me more pain, anger, guilt, worry, ect. than you'd believe. Basically the only reason I can see to hold onto the rings is in case my mother decides she wants them back. She tends to change her mind often. But like I said even if she is found, she'll be headed straight to jail. Personally pieces of jewelry arent what I need to think of/remember her.

In light of what you say, maybe you could put them away until your daughter is of college age and then sell them and give her the money for college? She would never need to know your mother, but at least you have something to give her.
It's a tough call and I would hate to be in your shoes and have to make a decision like this. _____________________

Very compassionate advice, Rose. I'm so sorry you're having to go through this, Tiaragwin.

heh, yeah I hate being in my shoes most days also. And thanks for the advice on saving for college for my daughter, I thought of that too. Sadly it's doubtful she will attend college because she suffers from Williams Syndrome. Similar to Down Syndrome. There are a small percent that can attend college, but it's not likely, and thats about 16 years away.

Thanks Paolo, it's nice to know some people care. Don't want to sound like a cold hearted bitch here, just trying to be honest.

Life has dealt me more than my fair share of hard knocks, Tiaragwin. Though I haven't walked in your shoes, I can certainly lend an empathetic ear.

Yeah, I would hold on to them for a little while, till your mom turns up.
Sorry to hear about all that. But hopefully, you will get to put that gold to some good use at some point. _____________________

You won't get the price they're worth, also.
