*sigh* this really is so stupid.
When i logged in today i had a negative rating from someone who bought an item, then got all upet when they tried to attach it and it turned into a box on thier head. Understood that this is a common problem for noobs unaware of how to get a clothing item out of a box- what irritates me is that it came thru as a system msg, and then dissapeared- BEFORE i could get the persons name written down to contact them and inform them of how to get inventory out of a box.

anyone know of a place this info is logged? pls get back with me if you do.
Or if you were the person who did the rating and happen to come across this post, contact me in-world so we can discuss a couple things- !.) how to get a product out of a box and 2.) besic ettiquette. I dont mind neg ratings, but i would like for them to be merited by my behaviour, not someone else's lack of expertise.

I am not sure but I usually check via control h to look at the history. I have never had a ratings as I came in-game though so I am not sure if that will solve your problem or not. Maybe ask a Linden to see if they can tell you? I don't know much else beyond that at this time, but I hope it helps.

The other thing I might recommend you try is look at your sales history (near the area where your stipend/tax info is stored) from when you last were on till the time you logged in and got that message. Sort through the names then look them up in the Find option at the top. Look for people who've given negative ratings and that might help you find the person who gave you negative feedback for equiping a box on their head. Any member past 1 months time wouldn't (I hope not anyways) be that dense.

Hope that helps.

Too late now. But, just hit CTRL-H to open the history box to review recent message. Especially a bunch of them when you first login.

The viewer doesnt log any of your activities. I would love to have logs of all chats and stuff but there isnt any such feature that im aware of.
I believe chat history may hold these messages along with normal chat text for the duration of your SL session. Press Ctrl-H to access it.
You can also customize the length of time things are displayed on the screen. I raised mine all the way up to 60 seconds.
I wouldnt worry about the neg rating. It seems that for everyone but the noobest of noobs your actual behavior and real reputation takes a huge precedence over whatever ratings you have, and we all know your reputation is "OMFG you look AWESOME! *droool*"

Interesting...so i go and check my account history,a nd this person claims they bought a $200 item. there is no record of an item sold for $200 going back as far as my acct history will show me...nor any record of this particular person having bought anything. (true, i do not recal the exact name, but i recall the first four letters or so, and the assumed pronunciation. nothing even remotely resembling either of these was in my history, tried searching by those letters in the "find" box, but no dice.) So my best guess is that whoever it is bought the item at EMP (which shows up differently than the items from my store) or as a resell.

No real purpose for posting any of this except to explain my confusion over the situation, and provide more detail so whoever did this will hopefully recognize themselves and contact me. I do my absolute best to be as kind and accomdating as possible to the ppl i meet, especially my customers. I find it callous and needlessly confrontational to neg rate someone over inventory before you even bother to ask anyone if you are going about unpackaging it properly.

So I guess i'll end out this thread by saying to anyone out there considering this course of action: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. I wouldnt reccomend this as a technique for getting ANYONE's attention, especially someone selling a product. Be adult about it, contact the person. Slapping on a neg rating is not the way to go, it makes the reciever upset and therefore MUCH less willing to work with you to resolve the problem.

LOL thanks everybody...i thought about the ctrl+H as soon as i hit the button to close down SL in a fit of temper, to go and write this post. *sigh* oh well.

My best hope right now is that perhaps the person who did this will see this thread and contact me. I would toss out the name phonetically, but i dont want to take the chance that there might be someone out there completely uninvolved who may be named similarly and might feel impact from this if i do so.

As for the neg rating itself, well, im not really stressing over it. My major concern is that this person will do this to someone with a bit more of a temper than i have, and find themselves with an enemy.

it's likely a bit late for this too but if you havent gone back into SL you can pull your log file out of the Application Data\SecondLife folder and it contains the chat info as well.

$200 eh? I wonder if it's someone who bought something of mine at EMP and thought it was yours because we're right near each other in the same aisle. Don't think I've had any sales through EMP for a few days though. Funny that people seem to figure out how to give a neg before they figure out how to ask someone how to get something out of a box, hehe. Sorry you got a neg Neph!

I remember my first purchase that came in a box. It had the item of clothing, a texture and I think a script. I also was guildy of trying to just attach it, getting a box on my avatar. I figured it out, and am happier for it (without neg-rating anyone of course).

Would it be easier just to put a description or a notecard in with the box explaining how to do it? (Admittedly the notecard would have to be examined to be read, creating a big of a catch-22 problem, however...) If I had that instruction, I know it would've helped me when I was buying things and had nobody to ask at 4:00am CST.

Just saying - you didn't deserve any neg-rating, of course.

jotes down mental notes and reccomends...First thing to add to Islands how to get items out of boxes a the prelude Islands. If the Lindens would add this as part of the path to the world then it would solve so many problems for soooo many people.

Just an Idea...

You are right that it can be a catch 22 Maxx. I have notecards in all of my items for sale. The notecard describes my services, etc., but at the bottom I include all sorts of notecards that are tips for those new to the game. One of those notecards is "How to open and wear the clothes you purchase". However, like you said I realized that some may not even know how to find this card in the first place. So I set up a "Tips and Information" kiosk near my voting station area, and they can click it to get the same information notecard.

Unfortunatly, that seems to be the most I can think of that can help. Though I still have to explain sometimes to those who don't click the tip booth AND don't know how to read the card inside the box. :p

This is one thing I always teach at my building classes, then I give them a box full of goodies to practice on.

Dunno if telling them at the Island would help - most people are on information overload at that point.

Well, it would also help if clicking the container box itself offered a notecard.

If you really want to be safe, do it on attach too. heh

wow garoad that is an amazingly stupidly simple and GREAT idea

if yer worried about neg-rating from newbies walking around with boxes on their heads (I was guilty of that when i bought a shirt from chip my first day, tho i jus fell over laughing and figured it out when i could catch my breath)....

include a simple script in your purchased items that on attach opens a notecard sayin 'whoops you attached this to yer avatar, yer supposed to take the items out from it instead.. here's how ya do that:... etc etc

I havent made many things for sale, but when I sell anything contained in a box, i always put a line like this in the 'description' field of the box:

'Buy, edit, and drag the contents to your inventory'

I've not had any negs or complaints... but then I've not sold many of anything (I just keep giving my stuff away! ha)

That *is* a great idea Garoad! Now to find a scriptor that I can buy a script like that from. I already know how to let someone click an item to get a notecard, but would not know how to make a script that would give them one when the item is attached incorrectly.

well, luckily the person in question figures it out and reversed the rating, which was very cool of them and i thank them for it.

but these are all great suggestions, and i will be integrating some of those solutions when i relocate my shop to chartruese :)
And yes, lol, i have been in this same boat myself. i found about 10 items the other day that i bought back when i first started...couldnt figure out (at the time) how to get them out of the box. so they went into my inventory and gathered dust-pixels. nice thing is, i found them all while cleaning out the other day, and it was like Christmas :p

if you belong to a group....send a message out and just name the item that was attached to the persons head along with your concern and how you want to resolve the problem.

try taking a look at the revolvers bein given away in the welcome area or most of the popular animator items.. (for instance animators hand a notrcard to you when you put them on givin a list of the possible animation actions)

If not, contact me in game, i could whip one up in a few minutes

speaking of neg rating...
12-08-2003 12:03
I was poking around the other evening, and discovered that there's a -1 in the Given category. Could someone explain what this means, as the only neg rates possible are in the first three categories?

Thanks.

it means you've given someone else a -1 in an attribute

this way people can see if someone has like -974 in the given to others category an stay the heck away from them at all costs heh ^.^

Nerg, a minus 1 in the given category means you gave someone a neg rating.
