GRIPE: WTF Do some clothing designers make their clothes No Transfer!?

While I am a male, I have a lot of gal pals and, as a dedicated Level 70 Consumer, I buy a lot of gifts. In fact, I think I've bought more dresses, skirts, hair, and assorted other women's clothing than some of the women in SL. And nothing drives me crazier to buy something just to find that it is marked "No Transfer". It was especially frustrating during the recent holidays. It just seems counterproductive. Personally, I will not buy from a designer who makes their items "No Transfer"-except Francis "Seburo Compact Exploder" Chung who has a very good reason.

There was a thread about this just a few days ago if memory serves. Some people prefer their clothes to be copyable so they can put it into folders with several different outfits. Some prefer transferable so they can be given away. Clothiers can't do both or they open themselves up to having their items freely distributed. If you want to gift something that's not transferable just ask the creator to help you out.

They *all* have a very good reason, Kiamat. The only way to try to keep someone from reselling a designers clothing is to mark it No Trans.

Most retailers will gift the item to whomever you wish if you contact them. Think of it as calling Giorgio Armani himself to deliver a gown to your fav. gal pal. ;)

Dismissing "No transfer" as being a useless priv mode for clothing assumes nobody wants to have multiple copies of the item in their inventory, and that's not the case. We can only allow copying, OR transfers...but we cannot allow both. My goal is to set it such that the majority of my customers are happy.

I prefer NOTRANS because I am not intent to sell what I have put a lot of consideration into acquiring. If I buy, I buy for keeps and to treasure, and having multiple personal copies -- depending on how I arrange my Inventory -- is of great interest to me. Sure saves me from having multiple messed-up folders.

Also, I don't think it'd be easy to locate another enthusiast of les neon watermelon fashions de temps. ;)

I have no problem with no transfer, as long as I know it's no transfer beforehand so that I can choose whether to buy it or not. So many times I have been to a vendo which you *pay* rathar than *buy*, take the box out of my inventory to unpack it, to find the contents are no transfer.

This drives me insane if I am purchasing as a gift. Yes I know that creators will pass it on, but I'd much rather choose to buy something I can gift myself.

Please, if you are selling items in a *pay* vendo, put something in the hovering text, or somewhere, to tell us that it's NT.

From a personal point of view, I would *much* rather have no copy than no trans, but that's just me.

Yes, heads-up warning!

I like what Starley does at her place for her new winter ensemble... it even has a warm but icy sign saying about the NO TRANSFER. ^_^

That's the way to go -- same thing with SLExchange and Gigas WebShop...

There should be a permissions option - No copy, transfer OR transfer, no copy. And if you tried to transfer after making copies a dialog box would come up saying if you transfer, your copies will be destroyed.

That's a great idea Essence.

Actually if I got more complaints, I COULD put two boxes side by side, and the customer can purchase the no-copy version OR the no-transfer version. The downside is that would cost double the prims, and for some clothiers like Chip, Neph, Mistress etc...that would be VERY costly.

Like Aimee said, it's a good idea, but in practise it means twice the work, twice the prims, and twice the space when putting something up for sale. If LSL let us set permissions, it would be a lot easier.

Kiamat - if your central issue is buying gifts, all items offered at SLExchange.com can be bought and delivered inWorld as a gift from you to the lucky recipient.

And as others have said, also contact designers inWorld to make arrangements for them to send gifts from you to the lucky recipient.

i can understand the no copy or no transfer permissions on clothes, what I don't get is no mod on clothing. Why do clothing makers set their clothes to no mod? You can't adjust them for size and you can't see them on you in appearance. Is there a logical reason for this?

Some clothiers make their stuff no-mod because any modifiable clothing, skins, or hair are all open to easy texture theft.

I would also ask texture sellers to think about not making them non transfer. I bought several textures before Christmas to make gifts for friends, then discovered the textures were no transfer and I coud not give the gifts to my friends. So a complete waste of money since it's unlikely I will use the textures elsewhere.

Alexa, as people have been saying, you can ask good clothiers to pass along no-transfer clothing to your friends as gifts. I do it all the time and I don't know any designer that is annoyed by this practice.

As for no-mod...sadly what chip is saying is true. It's very easy to rip off textures on mod enabled clothing.
