In the last two days, even thanks to the discussion with philip yesterday, that brought me there, i visited the newest sims that were brought in a couple weeks ago.
My first reaction was: WOW, those places are awesome! the landscaopes are complex but not overcrowded, and the road are perfect for driving in your car, to complete it, telehubs and bridges are really great builds.

Compared to the old sims they are visually much better, for instance many snow sims (for instance anton) have stripes of linden land that could be perfect for roads, but when i called Ryan linden to ask him, he told me they are defined "snow ways" to be used by snowbikes, snowboards and so forth...
Now i ask myself: Snowboards on perfectly flat land? This doesnt make much sense to me.
The result is that most of the old sims and expecially the snow sims are completely flact and unattractive to the eye, and this is even worse, because with resident buildings they seem like an unrealistic urban area with no road.
Shouldnt the content lindens get to work to put something (roads, bridges, better telehubs, more trees and tle like) in the totally empty pieces of linden land that now just look like complete wasteland?

I think this would incentivate residents that live there to better blend their buildings with the landscape, and to learn building tchniques to make their constructions better.
If you ahve to build on a complete wasteland you are not exactly incentivated to build something nice yourself, while if you have some good environment to buil in, you'll probably try to work on something more nice and interesting to see. Of course this is not a rule, there will be always big ugly black cubes, but i think that linden land in the old sims should really be used much better.

Here is a pic of me speeding in one of the new sims... isnt that bridge beautiful?

The snoways are also nice "snowbelts" if you will, that help to keep those sims from being built out completely. They provide a nice separation between parcels so that people have a way to move through the sim without having to make their way through/around residents' builds. One could also snowmobile or cross country ski using those snow ways.

The more empty an area is... the better performance your vehicle will exhibit, since there is less for the server to keep track of. I happen to like wide open empty areas, especially the snow areas. But I have to admit I'm more partial to hilly snow areas. The flat wide open snow areas are great to walk through if there are lots of trees. Sometimes even the empty ones are fun as I can imagine being at the south or north poles.

totally empty snow areas are cute if there are no building around, but in a deeply built area they just seem unrealistic... according to me its kinda bad that a whole sim is not served even by a single road.

I'm glad that there are a variety of areas to address the needs of different people. Some sims have roads.. some don't. You can find an area that has an urban feel to it or settle in one that feels more remote. The more variety the better.

Just an interesting thought.

What linden labs needs is a way to sell land with a "no land join/split" thing, that is enforced by the client/server, and just cannto be split up.

Therefore in areas that are less densely populated in real life (forests, alpine wilderness etc), LL could initially sparsely divide the land so that they maybe only a maximum of 10 resident owned pieces of land in a sim, and to that effect only 10 residential builds, thus reflecting the sparse population in these areas in RL.

now that would be *very* cool.

it would change, but i doubt they would ever do it, it seems that the trend between the administrators of SL is "do what you want with what you own" and this would go quite against it
