Imagine you've been working really hard all month. The only chance you've gotten to rest is brief moments when nobody is looking. You're exhausted, sick of everything, and want absolutely nothing more than to go to sleep and never wake up again. Late one night, your boss comes in and tells you the network guys are doing some kind of crazy techno thing, you know, whatever the heck those guys do, and anyway the network will be down for a long time, so you can go get some rest since you won't really be able to do anything anyway.
About 4:51am that night, you get an angry phone call demanding you come back to work immediately, and you'd better be ready to deal with customers because we've got a few hundred waiting here already.
I bet you'd be pretty groggy and disagreeable for quite a while too.

From: Mia Jackson *waits for formal message explaining why I cant teleport, attach objects, create objects, remove objects, or move at certain times*............. When the lindens bring the entire grid down for retooling or whatnot, the cache files (the stuff on the Sims that hold all of your inventory, textures, buildings, prims, and so on) are wiped out. The ACTUAL copies of your inventories, etc. are stored on several computers commonly referred to as "the asset server". Imagine a computer doing nothing but cranking out database information 24/7. That's the asset server. Anyways, when the sims come back up, they ping the asset server for all of the stuff that's immediately on the sim (homes, scripts, etc.). Then, as users filter back into the world, the Sims have to get, again from thr asset server, your inventory, what your avatar looks like, and so on. Furthermore, as folks wander around the world, the asset server has to warn any impending Sims in your path that you're coming; that means sending a copy of your entire inventory, plus attachments, plus your avatar, to the Sim-en-route. Now, multiply this by 1000, as everyone logs into the world. These problems normally go away after a day or so. This is a normal issue that happens every time the grid goes down. It'll happen again when 1.6 is released. LF

From: someone We're going to have to take down Second Life starting at 10pm Pacific, Saturday, Feb. 26, and should have it back up by 6am on Sunday. During this time we'll be moving onto a new, more reliable network infrastructure. We will not release a new version at this time.
I realize this is a bad time to take SL down, but unfortunately our network provider hasn't given us a choice in this matter. this wasn't an update. sounds like LL's ISP said "gotta make some network changes hope you don't mind" so i wouldn't blame Lindens for down time and problems they didn't create. plus what Lordfly said.
