Event Sponsorship - an experiment

Our Codas group bought a bunch of Zoe just days before LL withdrew financial support for events. The main reason we now own 85% of a sim is to host events, so no LL support was a bit of a setback. But we are pushing on and experimenting with different models for rewarding contest winners.

At our next event starting this Friday we want to enlist the support of several sponsors. Sponsors would donate prizes in exchange for advertising. Sponsors would be mentioned in the event listing, forum postings, the rules notecard, and there would be an area for a display with a landmark or notecard dispenser. In exchange sponsors would give us items we could use as prizes in the event - houses, art objects, vehicles, avatars, skins, scripts, animations, small plots of land, etc. Since our build events usually last a week or two, I think that's a good amount of advertising in exchange for an item that a sponsor can provide for essentially free.

Two things:

1) Has anyone tried this before? How did it work? Any suggestions?

2) Anyone who is interested in sponsoring a Coda contest, please let me know.

(I'm not sure which forum to post this in, so I'm plopping it in General until some wise Linden moves it, hah.)

It's currently the most popular method of subsidising events in SL, though the sponsorship is usually money...

I think I've used up my quota for this month, but there are plenty of others who might.

Here is what I want to know as a potential sponsor:

What is the event?
How long will it last?
What is the expected attendance?
Have you done this type of event before, and what was the attendance for that?
What is the general demographics of your attendees?
How many sponsors will you solicit for an event?
(in other words will my advertising get lost in a sea of sponsors)
What specific type of support are you looking for? $L, goods?
Where and how often will my company name be mentioned.
How will you guarantee the return/reimbursement of any funds or items if the event doesn't come off.
I would expect a notification of the event and a postmortem.

Anytime someone has approached Phobos Designs for a sponsorship, I've asked similar questions. From a business point of view I need to know how it will benefit my business with my targeted audience.

Don't be discouraged if you approach people and they turn you down. You just need to located the right match.

Thanks, Surreal, that was quite helpful. Let's see if I can give you some good answers...

What is the event?
Mythic Miniatures build contest - /invalid_link.html

How long will it last?
10 days building, 3 voting, 1 award day, 1 week display - total 3 weeks

What is the expected attendance?
15 participants, lots of viewers. Zoe gets a lot of fly-by traffic and people like to stop in and see the contest builds.

Have you done this type of event before, and what was the attendance for that?
Yes, Codas have done several successful long term build contests (Small Garden, Undersea Home, Bridge), and we always have good participation and viewership. Giving contestants lots of time and prims makes for some great builds that people like to come look at.

What is the general demographics of your attendees?
Participants are builders. Viewers are people who appreciate nice building.

How many sponsors will you solicit for an event?
Sponsorship will be limited to what we need to generate prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. 4 sponsors max for an event.

What specific type of support are you looking for? $L, goods?
Both L$ and prize items. Some players prefer cash, some like nifty prizes. Since we allow teams to build and sometimes have ties, being able to award several copies of a prize is desirable. Item type is open - houses, pets, vehicles, scripts, avatars, animations, texture packs, small plots of land - whatever you provide as a seller or service could be good for us.

Where and how often will my company name be mentioned.
Event posting, forum posting, rules notecard, a billboard display at the event, and verbal mention at kickoff, voting and award functions.

How will you guarantee the return/reimbursement of any funds or items if the event doesn't come off.
We can provide names of prize winers so you can verify the awards.

How does that work?

Looks Interesting. Contact me in world when you get a chance and I think we can do something sponsorwise.
