I'm talking purely L$ here... what amount of L$ or net worth (L$ value of land) does it take to be considered "rich" in SL?
I'm interested in getting your feedback and insights... I think it would be cool, after a definition of rich is established, to publish a Fortune type journal and have a little vite about SL's "Richest 50" or whatever...

The better question is why would anyone with any sense let Lindens pile up in their SL account to levels over 50-100K.
And why don't you post all of your money grubbing posts on Land and economy like everyone else?

If you believe Lindens dollars will be going up rather than down in 6 months to a year, you may want to wait before selling. Also some people keep that much money in play when they make large transactions as part of their daily business (IGE obviously, and land buyer/resellers).

its only risky if you feel that L$ have real world value. we all know that they do, but once i start thinking about that value then setting prices and spending L$ becomes much harder. when i started playing i had no idea you could buy or sell L$ so it was just play money, a year later it still is, because i haven't bought or sold any.

Ya, it IS risky but it doesn't seem to bother me since all of it came from my SL business. My mindset sways between jester's "it's just play money" theory and the fact that it has real value. Basically when the exchange value goes down I shrug it off as play money, when it goes up I smile knowing it's real money.

what I did/do, is raise my balance 10k everytime i cash out. I let it get to 100k more than I had, then sell 90k. So I still always put money aside if it raises in a year, yet at the same time I am covering my cost plus a little now.
Whats funny, when I first started SL, I preached against anyone who profited from SL. Until I developed skills and started making money myself.

Mine piles up because I refuse to engage in currency trade due to personal beliefs about what good it has done for the system as a whole.

The question is not what good, but how has is actually harmed it. If anything it has given talented creators motivation to continue building. Also, people who spend hundreds a month have a chance to get some money back and LL still gets the funds it needs for future growth. THere are many world like this that dont allow players to profit. I am not slamming your ideology, your entittled to opinions. Just explaining what happened when I opened my eyes and stopped thinking the way you do.

Thread like this tend to piss me off... Yes I sell Lindens, Yes I stash Lindens as well.... Yes I earn Lindens... Yes I spend Lindens... Who's business is it anyways?
Yesterday I was approached by some noobie asking me why people think I am "greedy"? I was at total shock to this... Being that I give thousands of Lindens away daily, give free homes to a large staff along with paying them...giving away tons and tons over the past year...
Well comes to find out this person that said this stuff to this noobie has been somehow tracking me and told this guy I am greedy because I sell more Lindens and make more money than the average person i SL makes in a month... So now... Success = Greed?

yes, there are 2 main themes to SL
profit non-profit
with profit, Aimee Weber hit the nail on the head. You can speculate and hold / buy money waiting on a decent value and make money with no real effort. And large transactions require large amounts of lindens, nobody wants to sell lindens today to have to buy them tomarrow. Many people allow money to sit into their account till it reaches a sell point, a number pre-deturmined, which once reached lets the player know its time to sell, so thier pockets may be buldging till that point. (or may be based on time I.E weekly, monthly) It is annoying and time consuming to constantly be selling your currency.
then you have non-profit, where people play SL as a game. their RL money stays in RL and thier SL money stays in SL. some of these players have aquired vast empires entirely on thier hard work and determination. reinvesting profit from their labor back into growth. some of these players now have a ton of money and assets. These are the true "rich" people of SL.
Many of the "rich" people in SL don't want to be published, but that is a neat idea. I would be intrested to know out of the top 50 "rich" people how many would wish to be excluded.

Many people think they get better treatment, they are just getting rewarded for hard work and putting up with the problems a beta faces and helping LL get this place off the ground. They deserve free land and all the direct teleports they get.

I think it would be fascinating to talk with the "rich" players and learn their story. I've always enjoyed Biography on A&E and think it'd be cool to have the same type thing is SL.

What I like about Second Life is the fact one need not have a heavy wallet to live richly. I don't currency trade, I don't live on a huge amount of Lindens, and my tier is the lowest to own any land. I live just fine, and have all the land/space/building area I need.
And as Cienna put it, I don't currency trade for similar reasons.
