With the first step made to teleport from Second Life to OpenSim, the doors of interoperability are opening, and that means the prospect of a Metaverse of many grids and worlds is looming quickly.

How will intellectual property rights be protected? How will the economy's value be preserved? Can a unified currency such as the Linden function outside of SL? Will land values plummet? Just how viable are the new open sims?

Much of this is being decided by only a small group of coders right now in the Architectural Working Group, and in JIRA discussions like this one:
