Being Virtual: Science Museum Dana Centre Mixed Reality Event

An increasing number of us are living part-real, part-virtual lives. What are the opportunities, and dangers, that a virtual identity provides? Discuss these issues at the Dana Centre in London or in SL on April 22, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. SLT/PDT. Speakers include:

• Will Gardener, Deputy Chief Executive of Childnet International
• Alistair Kelman, Barrister and Technologist
• Jim Purbrick, Software Engineer, Linden Lab
• Howard Rheingold, Lecturer, School of Information, University of California

Aleks Krotoski, journalist and author, will facilitate the event

Brought to you by the Science Museum, this mixed reality event will take place primarily in the Second Life world. Using computers at the Dana Centre, speakers’ avatars will appear at The Magicians Colonnade at Abracadabra, where they will answer audience questions using the Voice feature. The discussion will also be available as regular streaming audio at The Magicians Colonnade http://slurl.com/secondlife/Abracadabra/201/90/31 and at the balcony seating at xyz http://slurl.com/secondlife/xyz/155/250/58/ for those not using Voice. In-world audience members will submit questions via instant message, and Dana Centre audience members will follow suit, submitting their questions on postcards as they view the event as a live video stream.

Two in-world audience members will win real-life copies of Being Virtual: Who You Really Are Online. Free virtual goodies given away will include jackets, coffee, and some surprises. Instant message Gwen Carillon or Art Laxness for a teleport offer.

The Magicians Colonnade is a Tinies-accessible build. Large dragons and mechas are welcome in the rear of the courtyard.
