There are only two reasons to "buy land" in SL:
1- You feel safer comparing renting land (which it is, by the way) to the real world equivalent of spending thousands of USD or euros or pounds, etc. to buying actual square meters or square miles or square kilometers of real LAND on planet Earth. In real life in the USA, no one can take your land except if the government goes to court to evict you and, possibly, give you fair market value for your land. If you don't pay your property taxes on your REAL land in real life, you will lose it. In SL, LL only has to flick a switch and boom, your land is gone. Are you really going to go to court to get your land back ?
2- You hope to make a profit. FACT: Many people, including myself, have lost money in SL trying to profit off land. Why ? The land is way too expensive, and most people want the cheapest possible deals. If you are lucky enough to get really cheap land (which many of us in the past were not), then you MIGHT make a profit. Guess what ? Land prices in the foreseeable future WILL BE GOING DOWN, not up. Why ? There is way too much land in the grid, which severely depresses prices. Also, more virtual word grids will be coming online in a beta phase in the next year to 18 months. If you want to gamble that some fool will pay more for your land than you did, be my guest.
Renting is the only really SAFE option. If you want to call renting land on the mainland from SL "buying", I won't argue with you over semantics. It's still renting. LL or their server hosting company actually owns that server space. If you don't believe me, go ask your lawyer/attorney/barrister.
If you want to plunk down a lot of your money up front on a LEASE, be my guest. I won't. I've been in the SL land business for 2 years now, and I see the fallacy in that. Then again, I'm not interested in renting land from LL on the mainland either.
