Are opinion polls meaningless?

Not my idea, but I simply couldn't help myself. I must make this poll.

It was just too good to pass up.

I told myself to vote a certain way. Um, may I have the buttered toast without the crustaceans?

They have meaning, but like a gumball machine (if you own it), you decide how full it gets and what flavors come out.

I voted for all of them in case one of them was true.

What kind of opinion polls?

Ones like this one? where you ask a selectively-biased group of people to respond to a suggestive question? - the same sort of thing that CNN, Fox, and talk radio shows ask you to do on a daily basis?

Or ones that are designed with rigorous parameters in mind, with objective and quantified oversight, to be used as a data mine for all kinds of information-gathering functions - something like the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan might do, or the MIT polling system?

No criticism here, and no suggestion that ISR's methods are better than SL's polling function. Just curious. ;)

You are right, I could have been *much* more clear. I could have begged the question a bit more, and allowed a 'pie' option.

Plus, even with the best poll in the world, who's to say I've got the brains to understand what the results mean?

In this poll, the toast comes with the crustacea, the only possibly inferred choice is the species of crustacea. I suppose in the limit of really small ones, that may result in a seemingly creatureless (albeit shrimp-scented) piece of buttered toast.
