For some arbitrary value of "this". Opine, discuss.

Awwwww. But it has begun so beautifully! Why should it not end well?

We need to start a naked-bottom-scene-in-a-movie thread - "The Piano"? Wasn't there a naked bottom scene in it? And "A room With a View"? Perhaps. mmmmmmmm... "Women in Love"... "Pillow Book" ...

It just occured to me that I went from a quotation from Candide to naked bottoms - which isn't much of a leap since buttocks feature prominently in Candide.

Naked bottoms? Look what happens to Cunegund:

"Even the tender Candide, that affectionate lover, upon seeing his fair Cunegund all sunburned, with bleary eyes, a withered neck, wrinkled face and arms, all covered with a red scurf, started back with horror"

"Red scurf" seems like a pretty raw deal. :D

We are gathered here today in these majestic halls of old
To honor a man they called Sathington Willoughby
There's a joke or two, a pun or three, I feel that must be told
Then I go on to speak of Sathington Willoughby
Sathington Willoughby, the legislator that penned us up a bill
That banned the use of certain things like this and that
This and that
This and that
This and that

Is 'this' the end, my friend?
10-10-2005 01:00
From: someone

USAGE NOTE This and that are both used as demonstrative pronouns to refer to a thought expressed earlier: The letter was unopened; that (or this) in itself casts doubt on the inspector's theory. That is sometimes viewed as the better choice in referring to what has gone before (as in the preceding example). When the referent is yet to be mentioned, only this is used: This (not that) is what bothers me: we have no time to consider late applications. This is often used in speech and informal writing as an emphatic substitute for the indefinite article to refer to a specific thing or person: You should talk to this friend of mine at the Department of Motor Vehicles. I have this terrible feeling that I forgot to turn off the gas. It is best to avoid this substitution in formal writing except when a conversational tone is desired. See Usage Notes at that.

Nay, 'this' is only the beining.

Thank you all for your splendid riffs on the theme. If I may add one of my favorites.
Rosencrantz: To sum up: your father, whom you love, dies. You are his heir. You come back to find that hardly was the corpse cold before his young brother pops onto his throne and into his sheets, thereby offending both legal and natural practice. Now... why exactly are you behaving in this extraordinary manner?
Guildenstern: I can't imagine.
Which of course derives from many places but most clearly from Old Billy which not only opens not well with the ghost of Claudius, but also sees the deaths of Polonius, Ophelia, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, and Yorick, before reaching the final scene:
Queen: No, no, the drink, the drink,—O my dear Hamlet! The drink, the drink; I am poison’d. [Dies]
Hamlet: Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damned Danes, Drink off this potion;—is thy union here? Follow my mother. [KING dies].
Laertes: He is justly serv’d; It is a poison temper’d by himself, Exchange forgiveness with me, noble Hamlet: mine and my father’s death come not upon thee, Nor thine on me! [Dies]
Hamlet: O! I die, Horatio; The potent poison quite o’er-crows my spirit: I cannot live to hear the news from England, But I do prophesy the election lights On Fortinbras: he has my dying voice; So tell him, with the occurrents, more and less which have solicited—The rest is silence. [Dies]

That did not end well.

All this talk of demonstrative pronouns. . .

We have 'this' and 'that.' Please, please do not forget 'these' and 'those.'

While 'this' might not end well, these might. :D

From Absolutely Fabulous:

Edwina:In zen terms we are all just molecules. There's no difference between me and the table, me and a tree, me and Madonna...
Saffron:Except you have a fatter bottom.

Other things that did not end will include:
  1. Janet Jackson's Halftime show
  2. The WB Presents: HYPE
  3. "New" Coca-Cola
  4. GOM Exchange
  5. Owen Hart's last match
  6. 2000 Presidential Election
  7. the Dungeons & Dragons movie

And people complain about the violence and body count in today's media... pfft!

I, for one, thought "Hamlet" ended magnificently. ;)
