While doing some research trying to find out what the situation is like and what type of damage our resort suffered, I was relieved to see President Vicente Fox taking immediate and swift action to get a handle on the situation and get everyone to safety and get Cancun back on its feet. It seems like many countries have sent help to the region to bring thier residents back home. What shocked me is the U.S. response to this, which has been, from the sounds of it, nothing. Amazing if you consider how many U.S. residents are there.

“I feel the Mexican government is helping here to an extent, doing the best they can,” said KeVen Riley, town finance administrator for Paw Paw, Mich. “But the U.S. has done nothing. Where is our government? They are only preparing for Florida; they forgot about us.” A few people burst into tears when U.S. consular officer Lisa Vickers arrived later and said evacuation is largely up to tour operators. She urged people to stay with their tour groups.

So, sounds like we're not going - everything I've heard is that our resort suffered some fairly significant damage, but at least we have shelter and food.
If you're donating to any hurricane funds, please consider doing so for those residents in Cancun who had little to start with, but now have nothing and could use the aid.
