The movie, not the trailer... so a new thread [fangirl] Go. See. This. Movie. [/fangirl] Seriously, it's one of the best movies i've ever seen. Even if you haven't ever seen the series you will still like this movie. Go see it now. Or tomorrow. Don't take the kiddies, but take the rest of the family! Grandma would love it too. And be sure to curse Fox afterwards!

Saw it last night and I was very, very impressed. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. I've never seen the show so I think it's safe to say that it's not a requirement to enjoy the movie.

Well, I'd see a movie to spit on Fox - but all kidding aside, the trailers make the movie look fun. Something to take a precocious 11-year-old to?

Well, unless they've seen something like it before. It has pretty intense action scenes and violence, and descriptions of said violence beforehand sometimes. Not just space combat either, ground combat and hand-to-hand sometimes. Not just that tame scene of River kicking ass they had in the trailer... Unless they can understand chinese, there won't be any naughty language you have to worry about them picking up... Really, i'm not sure how much an 11 year old would understand what was going on. Up to you ultimately I guess.

I saw it last night. Loved it.
Without giving anything away, as a huge fan of Firefly, I was a little bit bothered by the minor changes that were made to the story, but nothing I couldn't get over. On the whole, it was excellent.
What has me puzzled though is what's gonna happen in the sequals. I read a while back that Serenity was to be just the first installment in a 3-part movie series. Considering what happened right after Shepheard Book said "I don't care what you believe in. Just believe," and especially what happened right after Wash said, "I'm a leaf on the wind," I'm really wondering what the heck is gonna become of the story.
Man, it's hard to discuss this without spoiling anything.

Seth, There are some scary moments in the movie what with the Reavers and all. It's really a judgement call-you know your child best. Lianne, Having not seen the show I did a double take the first time they whipped out with the (really awful) Chinese. I was like "Did I hear that right!?" Meanwhile none of the Chinese writing made any sense whatsoever. hehe -Kiamat Dusk ...fluent in Chinese Mandarin...

Kiamat,
You gotta see the show, man. Rent or buy the DVD's right away. As good as the movie was, the show's even better, especially if you can set aside a day to watch it all at once. There's only so much they can fit into a couple hours in a movie, but the show had time to really explore who the characters were, what was the nature of their relationships with eachother, what the universe was like, etc., and it was all done with such uncommon intelligence and maturity. It's one of my favorites of all time.

I'm going to have to give the show another look. I was really turned off by the "western in space" style of the pilot and never watched it after that. Then again, I hated B5 with a passion because of the horrible acting until out of boredom I started watching the reruns years later long enough to get sucked in to the big story arc. It became on of my all-time favorite scifi shows.

Definitely give it another look, Chip. You won't be disappointed. It does take a little getting used to, but after about 2-3 episodes you'll be hooked.
Think of it kind of like the new Battlestar Galactica. Remember at first I hated it and you loved it? Well, it was you who convinced me to keep watching, and now it's probably my favorite show currently on TV. Thanks for that. Hopefully I can return the favor here. Firefly is definitely worthwhile.

So it's really bad chinese, who cares? All they use it for is swearing or (rarely) ordering another drink in a bar. Plus it's 500 years in the future, sometime between now and then "Shiny" becomes widely used in English, why can't different dialects in Chinese change as well? And everyone else... bi zui, go see it!

The Ballad of Joss
10-02-2005 09:11
Since we're on the subject, I thought I'd post this in case anyone hasn't heard it yet. It's not all that new, but I don't think it's all that well known either. Now that the movie's finally out, it's particulalrly poignant. Firefly/Serenity fans should all get a kick out of this. Remember "The Ballad of Jane" from the Firefly episode, Janestown? (One of the best episodes there was, IMO) Well, the Bedlam Bards rewrote the song, and it pretty much says it all. Give it a listen. Here are the lyrics, in case anyone wants them: From: someone Joss! The Man They Call Joss!
Chorus: He wrote about spaceships, and shepherds and whores Stood-up to the networks and gave 'em whatfore Fox cancelled his programme, but that was their loss- The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!
Now Joss saw the viewers' heart breaking' He heard the browncoats' lament. He saw Fox managment takin' His show in a way that made no sense.
He said, "You can't do that to my program, Can't grind it under your heel." So he took all the cast, and now at last, They've landed a Big Damn Movie deal
*Chorus*
Now here is what separates Firefly, From other shows you're likely to see- It's meaningful and witty, and the setting's really gritty, And the theme song's about Serenity.
It's a little like a Western, *hyah* It's a little like X-files, It's better than Trek, and its funnier than Shrek, And it beats out Andromeda by miles.
*Chorus*
*Instrumental Solos*
*Chorus*
Now here is what separates Whedon From writers who slave in the core The Man they call Joss, well, he said to Fox "I'm going where no show has gone before."
He told us about Reavers, He told us about sin He took us to the black, and we ain't comin' back, 'Till all those crazy browncoats rise again.
*Chorus*

One of the best Sci-Fi films I've seen in a LONG time.
Alas, it only did about 10 mil at the box office this weekend, so dreams of the series coming back seem dim, but not gone. Let's hope for word of mouth and a 20 million weekend next weekend!

Seriously? That's all it did? I'm in shock! Our local theatre didn't get it and I'm a big enough nerd over the show that I actually drove 1 1/2 hrs to go see the first showing. 1:30 PM on a Friday and the theatre was packed! I really thought it was going to pull in way more than that. I wish I had found the show sooner. I'm another of the folks turned off by the space western theme and I never watched past the pilot. (That and I was bitter over Dark Angel getting cancelled and Firefly getting their time slot.) It wasn't until this June when a friend made me watch them all that I quickly fell in love with it. I've since bought the DVD, but I originally watched them all online. I'm not sure how legal it is so I won't link but a google of "Hello, Cowgirl" will lead you to them. I really liked the movie. My only problem with it is minor. They went out of their way to say it was a movie for the uninitiated, that you didn't have to be a fan of the show to enjoy the movie. And that is very true. However, I wish there had been some "in" jokes that only Firefly series fans would have gotten. Then again, maybe there were and I'm just not a big enough fan to have seen em. If you haven't seen it, go see Serenity darn it! It's definitely a "big screen" movie. Don't wait to rent it. And I'm not just saying that so they'll make enough money to get a green light for the trilogy...Ok...maybe I am a little. -Sun (go see it!)

I loved the series, and I loved the movie. I went with two people that haven't watched the series and they both loved it as well.
Of course I loved Buffy and Angel as well, so go figure.
I like the western/Sci-Fi feel to it, I guess because I'm a big fan of westerns and Sci-Fi.
The movie itself was a great mixture of humor and tragedy, with a fast action-filled pace that made me wish it were even longer. Great writing, directing and acting. Even the critics, who I would have thought would rip a sci-fi western to pieces, seem to really like it.
Now if they would just bring back the series...

It might only have done 10 million, but it still opened at #2, beating several mainstream movies. I wouldn't worry about the dollar amount, as I know a lot of geeks that will be going back to see it again. I know I will... and that kind of thing is what made Titanic such a titanic success.
I haven't enjoyed a movie that much in ages. I laughed, I cried, I got angry... mostly I laughed and gasped. I was hoping for more background on Book, as he seemed to have a very mysterious history that was only alluded to in the show.
And was The Operative the most villainous villain to come down the pike or what? Quite a refreshing change from all the bad guys that think they are doing good things, to have one that will freely admit that what he does is horrifically evil.

Well having looked 'bout a lil a few things seem to have come up. Apparently Fox (sigh) still owns the show, and allegedly, Universal did a deal to make 3 films.. .so if the 2nd is true WOOOHOO. That said I came up with a great idea I think all series creators/rep firms should insist for a show. I call it the "5 Season Clause". Simply put it is this. If a network decides to cancel a show before it has been on the air for 5 seasons than they must: 1: (if wanted) sell the rights of the series (and film rights) back to the series creator AT COST. At cost meaning it must be for the same price the network originally paid for the rights way back when they first acquired them. 2: they must transfer television rights to the creator, so they may re-air the show on any network they choose. This is only done with the aforementioned buy back. Two simple steps. Now you may ask, why 5 seasons? Two reasons. Firstly, a show after five seasons is either established as good, or it's crap. And second is that five seasons equals syndication. Either way the creator ends up the winner. In other words, they either get their property back to sell to another network, or to throw in the trash if they hated it.. or second, the series is guaranteed to be on long enough that the syndication rights are up for bidding. That's all for now.
