Mouse Thrown Into Fire Sets Home Ablaze

FORT SUMNER, N.M. (AP) - A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.

Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house.

No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed.

Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.

"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."

Gotta watch out for them furries!

What about the mouse?

Did they send it to the mousie trauma ward?

Will it get skin and fur grafts?

Was the man charged with reckless endangerment (of the house and occupants) as well as murder or some degree there of against the mouse?

What kinda doofus burns leaves in the middle of a drought, especially (I presume pretty darn) near to one's house? :(

Details!!

Poor lil mousie!

I wondered about the mouse too, but I have to say that I think any mouse that's burning hard enough to set a house on fire would probably be in a bit of trouble...

...who throws mice in fires anyway?

The kind of dumbass that burns leaves in a residential area during a drought that has already caused several homes to be burnt up. In those kinds of conditions, he shouldn't have been burning anything, let alone a living creature.

Not to mention having any sort of open fire in New Mexico. That place is dryer than a bone.

He's 81. Your questioning of his logic is invalid. Child abuse didn't even exist when he was growing up.

Sadly, this story has turned out to be a hoax/urban legend:

Well, you could shoot for urban legend. But you are right that is like the only way you "cover up that you burned the house down by accident", but hey, if he made that mouse story up he is pretty good. He had to tell police that with a straight face.
