I was browsing wikipedia, as usual, and came across this interesting map. I'm shocked. I had no idea there were so many countries where you could go to jail for being gay let alone 5 countries where you would get executed.

Now, let's cross reference this map with the SL Frapper map, and see who's in mortal danger... ![]() But it's really no laughing matter. This is ridiculous. I notice that Iraq and Afghanistan are two of the death penalty countries. Maybe there IS a good reason for the US to be there, after all. P2 _____________________

Has anyone the inacuracy of that map, due to the blue coloring of most of the US when mostof it should be yellow or orange? In most states, Victorian era laws still remain on the books to this day. For example, in NYS where I live, oral and anal are both illegal. While these laws are no longer inforced, and they still exist mainly because no legislator wants to be the one to make a name for himself by proposing they be repealed, the point is they since they're there, some whacked out prosecutor could enforce them if he wanted to. I wonder if it's the same in any of the other countries on the map.

Regardless of whether individual states and localities still have those laws on the books, this Supreme Court ruling supersedes them: Sodomy laws unconstitutional. So homosexuality is in fact legal in the U.S.
It's actually Iran that has the death penalty for it. Iraq has, I guess, modernized a bit on this matter? One thing that's interesting is that many of the Middle Eastern and Asian countries which make homosexuality illegal instead make provision for transexuality. Sex-change operations are actually allowed in Iran, and India has an entire caste or society known as hijras, who are considered a third sex. _____________________

Good point, Ananda. It would be interesting to know whether those countries that show discrimination and legal punishment against homosexuality actually practise it, have modified it through redefinition, or simply haven't eliminated it from the "books", so to speak.
No doubt some do, and in all cases having such codes are wrong - but "info-coms" such as this map sometimes are misleading. _____________________

I wouldnt be surprised if they actually enforced it. I mean, adulterous women are still stoned to death, right? Plus there's heaps of them who get their genitals chopped off before even knowing what they're for.

I dont know much about most of the other countries, but Malaysia did convict its former Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy. He got 9 years in prison, but the conviction got overturned by their supreme court on a technicality.
Malaysia is a mulsim country, and I think the prevailing attitude among the general populace is that homosexual acts is a crime. On the other hand, Indonesia, also a muslim country in South East Asia, does not have anti-sodomy laws. Singapore still has anti-sodomy laws in its books, but it very rarely enforce these anymore. However, the punishment (one to three lashes of the cane) is extremely painful. _____________________

Looks almost like the maps of red states and blue states we saw in the US around election time.
Apropos, many of those who made many states in this country 'red' during the election would like to see the US as a red country on this map. |

Plus there's heaps of them who get their genitals chopped off before even knowing what they're for. Can't quite postion your point, Eggy, with regard to geographic applicability. Surely "before even knowing what they're for" must refer to babies ? And the only chopping off of babies bits that I know is the widespread slicing off of foreskins, largely under the cover of a totally spurious medical pretence. Designed to mask a totally cultural practice, which, in the US and for Christians, is in fact a very recent development. Did you know that it is routine for the "surgeon" to sell said foreskin (without parental knowledge) for between US$100-200 a time ? For inclusion in astronomically expensive skin creams (which do actually work). Not a myth as I first thought. I tracked the whole business down, right to the clinics advertising the final product for well over $1000 a time, and complete with very carefully chosen word-description of the nature of the very special active ingredient. If you have done this to your own baby boy recently, I suggest you go ask the surgeon what he did with the bit he cut off. I think he'll be embarassed. |

Well, no, there's also "female circumcision" which, as I understand it, has the female's clitoris cut off so that she cannot feel sexual satisfaction.

Unnecessarily mutilating the defenceless. Seems obvious to me - but apparently not to others. Maybe there are some ego defences involved. Son wouldn't dare to want to be different from Dad would he ? What an insult to Dad's manhood that would be ....... |

I left that aside, because surely Eggy can't have been referring to that. It (FGM) normally isn't done (I believe) until the girl is very much older, nearing puberty, and certainly "knows what it is for". And there can be at least a pretence of consent, which for a tiny baby boy is absolutely impossible. Maybe you're referring to America, but in some countries in Africa it happens to girls at very young ages, and often in very unsanitary and painful conditions. Most men in these areas will not even consider marrying a woman who has not had it done. _____________________

Why are we getting the discussion deflected from MGM (widely practiced in the USA) to FGM (hardly practiced in the west at all)? Eggy can't have meant FGM. It really is not done to new born babies, anywhere, as far as I know. Is it a case of "our abuses good or at least trivial" but "your abuses appalling and to be always emphasized instead" ?
Each culture covers its own tracks. A traditional african FGM-er (mostly female) would probably keep trying to switch the topic the other way. I have a brother deeply traumatized and eternally angry that he was mutilated this way (in England) without ever being asked. You should hear what he has to say on the topic. He wants to know if his foreskin was applied to a rich womans face, to secretly benefit the purse of the very medic who recommended the operation. Even ignoring the incentive to remove the maximum possible, since payment is by weight. |

So ? That is how cultural propaganda works. I understand that in the US a substantial proportion of women have bought the ludicrous "unclean" propaganda. They are actually very dubious about sexual contact with any male who is the way God (and his DNA) designed him, and many will actually reject him as abnormal and even disgusting. Isn't it the same, Lo ? Hey, I'm not defending any genital mutilation at all. I'm just putting some more information out there. I'm also fairly sure Eggy meant women, because the sentence before he mentions the genital mutilation mentions women. I mean, adulterous women are still stoned to death, right? Then he says: Plus there's heaps of them who get their genitals chopped off before even knowing what they're for. Anyway, you're right, this little sidetrack has nothing to do with the topic at hand so let's drop it. _____________________
